"i do know that we're all gonna die someday an that no death has ever stopped the world. my poems are written in a rhythm of unpoetic distortion / divided by pierced ears." DISCOGRAPHY: Bob Dylan
One of my earliest influences as I first started getting into music was the brilliant Bob Dylan. So much has been said about his songwriting, persona, and influence over the past 6 decades that I feel the only thing I can add to the conversation is what his music means to me personally. Certainly you could look to a thousand different folksy guys with guitars today and find something musically and visually similar. But even though Dylan was the first to break the mold there has always been something otherworldly and special about his music. A certain literary prowess, a raw human empathy that really resonated with me as a young teenage nobody with nothing to lose and much to gain. Those raspy, conversational vocals, the rough-around-the-edges personality of the music, the impeccable lyrical content densely packed with brilliant storytelling, personal wisdom, and societal observations. Even when flawed, his songwriting bleeds humanity and reality, robust with intricate detail and a youthful spirit that evolves and ages in real time before the listeners' very ears. Bob Dylan is like an old friend who always has a lengthy story to tell; regardless of fabrications and exaggerations, the tale weaved is one that aims to capture the bigger picture of history, relationships, and life as we know it. I may not own even half of what he has released in his lifetime, and what I say here serves no justice to what he has done for the world of music, pop culture, and society as a whole, but as a long time fan I can only sit and listen and wait for the next chapter in this man's ingenious songwriting catalog, whenever (and if) it may come.
