This drawing has been made by Pablo Picasso the great artist for the Congress of Black Writers and Artists.
Few people know that, but this congress was a meeting of leading black intellectuals for the purpose of addressing the issues of colonialism, slavery, and Négritude.
The First Congress of Black Writers and Artists was organized by the panafrican quarterly cultural, political, and literary review Présence Africaine was held in Paris, at La Sorbonne in September 1956. In other words, it was the first congress that gathered most black and african minds from across the globe in the same place. For the first time these thinkers from the Usa could meet those who came from African countries.
But very few people know that this was a big FAIL. Why? Because of the ideologies. All the people were of African descent, but all the people did not think the same way. The people who came from the Usa wanted to promote a thought of freedom without giving up the way of life they got from the Usa, while the thinkers and artists from the African countries wanted to promote the idea of a total come back to the roots and the way of life of the ancestors. So, they could not find a solution. But it was still considered as a major evolution, since they decided to gather again few years later in Rome.
I feel like today most people realised which way was the best way. That it was important to value the culture and promote it because it is a major part of our identity. It's about self love and respect.
What do you think about it, which team would you join if you were there? And why?
