The Va rivers have dropped to summer time levels. Which means they are below the whitewater fun baseline, but the fishing is outstanding at these levels. I loaded the Caper up and I went up to Brandys area. First to the Rappahannock for an evening run on Monday. Even though the rapids aren't exhilarating they still offer a unique challenge. The lines thru the rapids are harder to see. Its not so much an adrenalin rush at these levels, more of a puzzle solving and technical boat control test. I also think you can see more of the personality of the river at the low levels.
Next was an all day float on the confidential river. It was low and scrapey but super fishy. Even saying "We are gonna catch em today" after the first two within sight of the launch couldn't stop the action. Two big highlights was Brandys 19.5 inch smallie and seeing a giant carp. The carp looked to big for the river. That was a true river monster. Brandy's fight with the other river monster was intense! I paddled close to watch the action. The big smallie try to dive under rocks and get behind branches before brandy finally landed the nearly citation smallmouth bass.
Halfway thru the run the first rain hit. It was harder to read the rocks with the rain hitting the water. We fished between the next rain before we got to the fall line.
With the water being low the drops were higher with more rocks exposed. I plunged the first drop and made it successfully. The second and last drop I got stuck but got out of it without flipping.
After the rains the gnats and mosquitoes came out. As we tried to fish, gnats repeatedly got into our eyes. Brandy yelled "Why do they want to get in there!!" Water levels: Rapp 2.53 foot. Confidential 3.76 foot #oceankayak #yakattack #paddleva #kokatat #aquabound #bending_branches #aftco #originalmauijim #nauticsport #kayakkevindotcom
