Giant Doris!

Flores, Açores
You are incredibly privileged when for 20 days places like this become your "office" #view. Oceano Azul Expedition #Azores in partnership with the #waittfoundation and #natgeopristineseas participated in a scientific #expedition focused on the #conservation of these #islands. The goal was to gather information to understand the needs and available options in terms of preservation of this #unique #ecosystem.
An incredible unforgettable experience!! #flores #portugal #nature #ocean #blue #oceanconservation #blueazores #science #oceanoazulexpedition @oceanoazulfoundation @waiitfoundation @natgeopristineseas

A dusky grouper is caught in a moment of gaping on the sandy seafloor off the coast of Corvo Island. It may look like this grouper is having a pandiculation — a yawn and a stretch — but we still don’t understand the many functions of yawning, so we can’t know for sure. This gaping may be used to increase the flow of water through their mouth and gills, and thereby increase the flow of oxygen to the fish's tissues.

A slipper lobster (Scyallarides lateus) are said to be quite tasty which is why they are now endangered. Also called the Sea cricket and Cicala di mare in Italian (Cicada of the sea!) it is now rare over much of its range due to overfishing. The slipper lobster does not have claws, the highly prized flesh comes from the tail.
The large flat plates sticking out in front of its body are actually antennae!

Our most recent expedition with @oceanazulfoundation and @waittfoundation was not only a successful scientific exploration, but also an outstanding adventure at sea. And since we have a love for numbers, here are a few from the expedition that stand out:
🐋28 researchers
🐋96 participants
🐋More than 600 dives and more than 500 hours spent underwater
🐋21,469 square kilometers of newly-mapped sea floor area
🐋650 miles travelled
🐋60 hours spent exploring the deep-sea ecosystems

Faja Grande on Flores was a destination for all on our expedition who could get off the ship for a few hours. Located on Flores Island this is the a large volcanic "Fall", an area that over millennia has sheared away from the main flow, making for a nice place to put a city on the coast of Flores Island in the Azores. Jenn Caselle of @UCSB, Emanuel Goncalves of Oceano Azul and Whitney Goodell of the University of Hawaii enjoy a beautiful moment and some elevation ashore during our #OceanoAzulExpedition.

A Bearded fireworm (Hermodice carunculata) slowly crawls across the sea floor in the Western Azores for our photographer, @thejoelepore.
These hungry polychaete worms are, like many colorful ocean creatures, venomous. The white hairs are bristles than can penetrate human skin and deliver a painful neurotoxin. Don’t touch.

The Blennies are just too much fun. Little guys, often perched in nooks or crannies or with their little heads poking out of holes. They're mouths often resemble insane grins and they often have little cirri protruding from their heads. We're not sure exactly which species this is, shout it out if you know.
This one was shot by the supertelented @ManuSanFelix_Official during the #oceanoAzulExpedition conducted oil the western Azores by @OceanoAzulFoundation and @NatGeoPristineSeas and ourselves.

Alicia Mirabiles. No, that’s not a new contestant on The Voice.
The Berried anemone resembles of pile of juicy berries during the day but at night the “berries” extend on columns and little tentacles extrude to sweep nutrients from the water. Worthy of a scene in a #SciFi movie, this little miracle happens right here on earth every night. In the Azores. Where we will soon present our results and continue talks with the local government on protections for 20% of their waters.
The #OceanoAzulExpedition with @natgeopristineseas and @oceanoazulfoundation will soon draw to a close but the work saving our oceans never ends.

New hydrothermal field discovered during the Oceano Azul Expedition in the Azores was named “LUSO”. What else?
The scientific team attributed this name because it was the first time that an expedition organized by a Portuguese institution, led by Portuguese scientists and using national ships and means finds a deep sea hydrothermal field in Portuguese waters. @waittfoundation @natgeopristineseas @marinhaportuguesa #emepc #pristineseas #oceanoazulfoundation #oceanoazulexpedition #blueazores #ocean #science #conservation

A crazy cornucopia of crustaceans and other creatures in this selection from the dropcams deployed during the expedition we just concluded in the Azores. In the future we’ll have something a bit more informative as to what you are looking at but we wanted to get you a peek. It’s pretty busy down there and super interesting.

The Blue Shark (Prionace glauca) is taken in large numbers (an estimated 20 million individuals annually), mainly as bycatch, but there are no population estimates and many catches are unreported. There is concern over the removal of such large numbers of this likely keystone predator from the oceanic ecosystem.
