We have doors in the center of our ship that open up the floor like an accordian and that's where we deploy the ROV. I'll give you a sec to let that sink in.
. . . .
. .⛴️🌊🤔💦
Yes, that means that while the ROV is diving, there is a big, open window in the middle of the ship that we walk by all day and look down at the ocean below.
The R/V Western Flyer is a twin-hulled ship, which means it floats on two huge pontoons on the sides and the center is actually 15ish feet (5ish meters) ABOVE the sea surface 💦 Be sure to check my stories and @mbari_news for lots of images and video from the expedition!

Gwendolyn the ray disrupting some small fry with her feeding. .
The #spottedeagleray (#Aetobatusnarinari) is a cartilaginous fish of the #eagleray family, #Myliobatidae. As traditionally recognized, it is found globally in tropical regions, including the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian #Oceans. Recent authorities have restricted it to the Atlantic (including the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico) with other populations recognized as the #ocellatedeagleray (A. ocellatus) and Pacific white-spotted eagle ray (A. laticeps). Spotted eagle rays are most commonly seen alone, but occasionally swim in groups. They are ovoviviparous, the female retaining the eggs then releasing the young as miniature versions of the parent.

This ray can be identified by its dark dorsal surface covered in white spots or rings. Near the base of the ray's relatively long tail, just behind the pelvic fins, are several venomous, barbed stingers. Spotted eagle rays commonly feed on small fish and crustaceans, and will sometimes dig with their snouts to look for food buried in the sand of the sea bed. These rays are commonly observed leaping out of the water, and on at least two occasions have been reported as having jumped into boats, in one incident resulting in the death of a woman in the Florida Keys. The spotted eagle ray is hunted by a wide variety of sharks. The rays are considered near threatened on the IUCN Red List. They are fished mainly in Southeast Asia and Africa, the most common market being in commercial trade and aquariums. They are protected in the Great Barrier Reef.

Today’s @nautiluslive dive focused on the only known mud volcano along the Cascadia Margin. Mud volcanos are large mud formations usually formed by the violent release of gas from the sea floor, gas like methane, the star of this leg of the expedition! During the dive, the team spotted a LOT of life including rockfish, flatfish, halibut, mollusks, bacterial mats, sea stars, anemones, sponges and more! This is the first time anyone has surveyed this particular location, so the videos and samples collected will be used to help researchers better understand deep sea ecosystems. The formation was located through the use of multi-beam sonar mapping. The base of the mud volcano was found at 420 m below the surface, with the summit extending up 60 m from the ocean floor. #nautiluslive #geology #oceanscience #ocean #exploration #scicomm #marinebiology #underwaterphotography #uwphotography video via nautiluslive.org livestream & graphic via OET/Nautilus Live

How are we making the ocean 🌊 more acidic 🍋, why does it matter 🤷🏽‍♀️, and what can we do 💪🏽? Here’s a summary of my latest blog post 📝:
...
Science Summary 🔬
•We are putting carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere
...
•Lots of this CO2 ends up in the ocean
...
•Extra CO2 makes the ocean more acidic
...
•The change is small, but is happening fast
...
•We expect this to hurt a lot of different ocean animals and plants
...
My take on what we need to do: 💪🏽
•We need to make smarter choices and put less (or no) CO2 into the atmosphere
...
•The most important thing we can do is inspire our community leaders to make changes like: stopping the use of government money for coal, oil, and gas projects; shifting to clean renewable energy; and putting in systems (like carbon taxes) that motivate us to put out less CO2
...
And that's Ocean Acidification. If you want more details on how this works or where I got my information, please check out my full blog post (linked in my profile @act.on.science).

🏃‍♂️ 🥗 What's your path to a healthier lifestyle?
I am Benjamin, co-founder of MARPHYL Marine Phytoplankton. 🙋‍♂️ Allow me to share my story with you. ........
A few years ago my career path led me to work in finance in Canada. I faced various challenges that many young professionals experience, and was not living a healthy lifestyle. At some point, I realized that I needed to make a change, and I decided to educate myself to bring balance to my life. At the same time, I was lucky to meet my partner, Arantza, who shared similar values and goals. While looking for ways to improve our wellbeing in the most sustainable way, we discovered 100% wild, multi-species Marine Phytoplankton thriving in the pristine waters of Georgia Straight near Vancouver Island. Since we added it to our daily diet, we’ve experienced an improvement in energy levels and an increased ability to focus among many others benefits while being less prone to illness. Naturally, we wanted to share all the benefits of this superfood with the world.

Significant increases in atmospheric carbon have been correlated with fossil fuel use and industrial activity and have therefore impacted on natural systems. As concentrations increase there is a greater effect on climate which ultimately impacts all living organisms (marine and land). #GoBlue2018

I’m having a lot of fun making gifs and videos with the #NautilusLive stream. I’ve been this obsessed for years from my home in Philly....I can’t imagine how excited I’ll be to actually be aboard in September 🤯🤩😍Even when the ROVs and cameras aren’t deployed, @nautiluslive is mapping the seafloor using multi beam sonar! This video is actually a sped up version of about 15 min of livestream mapping. While it may not be as exciting in the moment as a beautiful eel or a cockatoo squid, mapping the seafloor is TOTALLY COOL. Using this technology, scientists aboard were able to identify a bubble stream (of methane!) that rises up to 900 m from the seafloor! The crew is searching for the enormous seep literally RIGHT NOW and you can watch it live and ask questions at nautiluslive.org #chemistry #oceanscience #marinebio #oceanexploration #noaa #scicomm via OET/Nautilus Live livestream 6.19.18

THE NET HAS ARRIVED! And it is everything we hoped for! Finally we can ditch our handmade nets and use this thing of beauty 😍
One of the biggest challenges we've had in starting this project was sourcing equipment. Eventually, we had to buy our net, microscope, sampling bottles and other equipment with our own money. We've since gained the support of @vivobarefoot
which we are beyond grateful for, however it still saddens us how difficult it was for two qualified scientists to get hold of free equipment! This is why one of our dreams for the future of aFloat is to encourage citizen science by having equipment available for anyone to borrow for their research. We hope more people will feel empowered to take research into their own hands and discover for themselves the answers to their burning questions! Everyone can be a scientist!
(FYI - net is a 500 micrometre mesh size neuston trawler, we'll be rigging it to the front of the boat between the two hulls of the catamaran to avoid contamination and disturbance from our wake and analysing our samples afterwards with a microscope on board)

Since I’m away right now, I’m doing a little re-posting of things so that they exist on this account - sorry if you’ve seen it before! To start off, let’s re-introduce the mini-series that I’m doing on how climate change is affecting our oceans. We’re looking at 5 big changes:
...
Ocean Acidification
...
Ocean Warming
...
Sea Level Rise
...
Low Oxygen Zones
...
Harmful Algal Blooms
...
Later this week I’ll re-post on ocean acidification, so look out for that! As always, hit up my blog for more details.
...
Any questions or comments? Message me on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, or comment below. I’d love to hear from you! Let's work together to protect our oceans 🌊.

"Cephalopod Week"
-
🔵Maestro's Notes: This post comes from Our Friends in Discovery, Exploration and The Conservation of Marine Life, Onboard Alucia 1 & 2, Ocean X @oceanx - It’s #CephalopodWeek, celebrating the family of animals encompassing Squid, Octopuses, Nautiluses, and Cuttlefish-- some of the smartest creatures on our planet. (After all, this time eight years ago, #PaulTheOctopus “predicted” the winner of the #WorldCup. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) Cephalopods are widely regarded as the most intelligent of the invertebrates, and have well developed senses and large brains (larger than those of gastropods). The nervous system of cephalopods is the most complex of the invertebrates and their brain-to-body-mass ratio falls between that of endothermicand ectothermic vertebrates. Captive cephalopods have also been known to climb out of their aquaria, maneuver a distance of the lab floor, enter another aquarium to feed on the crabs, and return to their own aquarium.

The brain is protected in a cartilaginouscranium. The giant nerve fibers of the cephalopod mantle have been widely used for many years as experimental material in neurophysiology; their large diameter (due to lack of myelination) makes them relatively easy to study compared with other animals. Many cephalopods are social creatures; when isolated from their own kind, some species have been observed shoaling with fish.

Some cephalopods are able to fly through the air for distances of up to 50 m. While cephalopods are not particularly aerodynamic, they achieve these impressive ranges by jet-propulsion; water continues to be expelled from the funnel while the organism is in the air. The animals spread their fins and tentacles to form wings and actively control lift force with body posture. One species, Todarodes pacificus, has been observed spreading tentacles in a flat fan shape with a mucus film between the individual tentacles while another, Sepioteuthis sepioidea, has been observed putting the tentacles in a circular arrangement. 🎵🎹 Dum Maro Dum

Scientists have learned that the Caribbean rock mantis shrimp (Neogonodactylus bredini) is anything but slapdash in its approach to decimating its shell-covered food morsel. In a study reported on June 14, researchers detail its tactics.
Researchers provided the mantis shrimp with sea snails of various shapes and saw that it would switch how it pummeled its prey depending on the shell’s thickness.

The largest migration on Earth takes place in the sea. Each night billions of inhabitants come up from the mesopelagic to feed, they swim back down into the relative darkness of the twilight zone during the day to take cover from potential predators. Illustration by @KellyLance_.⠀

"With an estimated 10 billion metric tons of marine life, including fish, shrimp and squid, these depths offer a seemingly endless bounty. That’s why fishing nations are looking closely at this region of the sea. As of spring 2017, for instance, Norway had issued 46 new licenses for vessels to fish in the mesopelagic in the previous nine months, according to The Economist. Harvesting just 1 percent of this zone would double our overall fisheries catch, with consequences we have yet to grasp." ~ MBARI CEO Chris Scholin and @montereybayaquarium Executive Director Julie Packard in a @NYTimes op-ed last week. ⠀
