🌊 I’ve been in Halifax for the last couple of days to be part of an international panel on fisheries and oceans. I had the exciting opportunity to speak with Minister Wilkinson, play with right whales in virtual reality, tour the awesome ocean research facilities at #dalhousieu #oceanscience center and meet many amazing / interesting young people studying the marine world. Thanks for letting me be your last min MC and contribute to policy recommendations before #g7halifax

It’s a beautiful day to be in the field! STA’s Environmental Specialist Esther Kennedy is demonstrating proper plankton towing technique to our new @uafblast student Sierra who will be assisting us by doing a research project on phytoplankton. We took the opportunity to visit Herring Cove and take a sample to see if we can figure out what plankton is causing the water to turn this mysterious blue green color. It’s always exciting to use science to find out more about the natural world around us, and even more exciting to have a new member joining our team and community of people who love plankton!

One of the early discoveries made on this mission are coral species observed deeper than they’ve ever been seen before. Given the discovery of the massive 83 mile long coral reef off the Carolinas earlier this month, they’re wondering just how much these areas are connected, and shows us how much research is left to do. @oceanx @natgeo @tritonsubmarines #oceanscience #saveouroceans #oceanconservation #submersible #deepdive #subpilot

First dive in the books at Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument around the first unexplored seamount. The amazing Nav team is back to work mapping the next location and science team is up processing samples from over 2000 m below the ocean surface.
.
.
The first dive was filled with coral colonies and the ROV pilots were able to test a new rock gripper developed by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory .
.
Getting back in the groove of this different type of video work and excited to be on watch with the talented ROV Herc Pilot @the_diff.erence , ROV Argus pilot @manyufacturing and #scicomm extraordinaire @snailix_phl (along with the dream team scientists and our navigator).

Here’s a sneak peek of a new sticker we’re working on that was inspired by the discovery of the first truly omnivorous shark species!! 😍Bonnetheads have been known to consume sea grass, but what wasn’t known was that sea grass makes up over 62% of their gut content mass! ..
...
"Bonnetheads have a digestive system that is very similar to other closely-related species that are definitely strictly carnivorous, so the fact that they are acting like omnivores is truly remarkable," says Samantha Leigh, a study co-author and an expert in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Irvine, to the AFP.

It’s official, seahorses are the worst swimmers EVER to grace the watery depths of the big blu. I actually don’t know any fun facts about sea horses so have nothing to say apart from: cuuuuuuuute 🦄🦄🦄 If you have a fun seahorse fact, hit me up in the comments 👇🏼

Who says the Southern Ocean is inaccessible? Anyone who's ever taken the long journey there on an icebreaker!⠀

Despite its importance to the Earth’s climate, its rough winds and inaccessibility have kept the biogeochemical dynamics of the Southern Ocean essentially an enigma to scientists. SOCCOM, aims to collect as much information as possible about the Southern Ocean and its connection to the climate. Using 200 autonomous floats, SOCCOM has been taking measuements on the Southern Ocean’s oxygen, nitrate, and carbon content in order to investigate its role in the global carbon cycle. It’s clear that the Southern Ocean absorbs enormous amounts of anthropogenic carbon dioxide, but as it continues to be flushed with carbon dioxide, the absorption power of the Southern Ocean will begin to wane, and Southern Ocean sponge may only be able to hold back the effects of climate change for so long. The data records from SOCCOM can help predict how it will change over time depending on how the world’s carbon output changes.⠀

At the equator, the sun hits the earth at a direct angle, which transfers maximum heat. At the poles the angle is different and most of the sunlight glances off. Cold water starts at the poles. And warm water starts at the equator. (Duh!!)⠀

The “global conveyor belt” is a system of ocean currents that circulate ocean water around the globe. California’s ocean water is coming from the north (Alaska, brrrr). The Atlantic coast has warmer water because it comes from the equator and heads northward (lucky!) ⠀

The past few weeks have been quite crazy! 🐢 but we finally found some nesting hawksbills to attach transmitters to to get crucial data for the conservation of this species and our theses! . .
It’s really important the point out that this work is all done under permits for research purposes. We take extensive care to make sure the turtle is protected and we do what we can to reduce stress. This is a satellite transmitter that we attach to the turtle which allows us to track her movement when she leaves the nesting beach. . .

As the team is getting ready for our upcoming expeditions we look back on our project in 2017 with National Geographic. We cant wait to explore more of the deep dark waters of the PNW. However for the time being our focus has shifted to Belize. We are very excited to announce our partnership with @oceana_bze for our expedition this winter! If you are unfamiliar with @oceana they are the largest international ocean conservation and advocacy organization. They exist to protect and restore the ocean on a global scale. Give them a follow to support a great cause!

These photos (illustration courtesy of Natalie Renier of @woodshole_ocean and photographs courtesy of @noaafisheries and @NASA) are from a fantastic article by Suzi Clark in which she describes her graduate research on the complexity of environmental factors that can cause harmful algal blooms (HABs), with the goal of increasing our ability to predict for HABs and minimize their damage. Read the article from Oceanus magazine here: https://www.whoi.edu/oceanus/feature/the-recipe-for-a-harmful-algal-bloom
