He told me that he was half Norwegian and half Ojibwe, I vaguely recall which tribe, but likely it was the Leech Lake Band. He explained that about a year ago, on a summer day, he had just finished a sweat lodge ceremony and at the end was supposed to drink spring water. He couldn’t think of a nearby spring, but he heard rumor that an old man of Swedish decent lived on the edge of town and had a spring on his property . So he drove out to see the fellow. He said the guys driveway was very long and narrow with low ground on either side. He met the old man and was granted permission to drink from the spring as much as he wanted. Albert said that the old man cautioned him about getting back out to the road. He told Albert that everyone that comes here has to back all the way out because there was no room to turn around. Albert thought about that as he was drinking from the spring. When he finished he had to back all the way out again. It was then that he decided to keep backing up. And that is exactly what he did, he never stopped backing up. He faced the opposite way in which he was traveling.
