Reposted from @victorian_vibes - I know I’ve posted a picture of this beauty before, but I couldn’t drive past it and NOT take another shot! This time, in the bitter cold without its luscious foliage contrasting a blue open sky.... ok winter I’m over you. London, Ontario. •

The historic Frederick E. DuToit house on 121 Hickory built circa 1870. He was the Chaska Herald newspaper publisher, a politician and 2nd generation member of the influential family who were credited with much of Chaska’s commercial growth. #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #chaska #chaskamn #minnesota #chaskahistoricalsociety #archilovers #architecture #oldhouse #brick #brickstagram #creambrick #architecturephotography #spooky #beautifulhouseoldandnew #arkitektur #architexture #chaskabrick #houseportrait

Who Doesn't Love a Screened in Porch? Our Old Home has a porch, that wraps from the Front all around to the back. We took a Corner Section In the back and had it screened in. We have 3 sets of French doors that open up to it from inside our house. It's basically a 2nd living area. That Old Farm table and benches is PERFECT for outdoor dining and playing games. One of my FAVORITE things to do, is open up those doors and let Fresh Air and Sunshine in! 💛 Not today though...cold and Rainy⛈. So Patiently I will wait...and Daydream of Spring!

Always wished I could have saved this one... It’s just down the road from one of several high water road closures in our area. Some of you have had a snowy winter. We’re having ☔️...with no end in sight. 🌧 #oldhouselove #rainyseason

Houses at 1824-1826 Mullett, taken on August 26, 1949 in the Black Bottom neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan.

Perhaps a project we feature down the road - Black Bottom neighborhood was the sacrificial lamb for modern day "progress" - see out stories for the link to the excellent article by Amy Crawford and CityLab.

A familiar name in Carrollton, this was the home of Dr. James T. Nix built in 1922 across the street from Palmer Park. He was born in South Carolina and relocated to Carrollton with his family when a young boy where he would remain for the rest of his life. After being denied a zoning change that would have allowed James and his brothers to build a business on the corners of Carrollton Ave. and Willow, they donated the land to the city and the Nix Memorial Public Library opened there in 1930. Through no small list of obstacles, Nix Library is still in operation and has recently received a much needed renovation. The Nix family name lives on etched in stone above the library entrance and the Doctor's former home is on the list of Historic New Orleans landmarks.

A little bit red, a little bit blue a good geometric pattern, I’ve got the rug for you. Meet Britta. A 1930’s vintage wool beauty, Britta has the most gorgeous faded banding that only a rug with a story does right. She’s red in all the best ways, not too bright, but opting for a more deep, burgundy red which is made even deeper with complex dark blue hues. Britta was likely made in the snow capped mountains of Qashqai by the nomadic turkeman people using vegetable dyes to create the most stunning low piled beauty. She’s a rug fit for any space in your home, though I love the idea of her at the end of a bed, or piled on top of another more neutral rug in a living room. $465 sends this mountain goddess home with you. 8’ 7” x 4’ 8 ½”. Delivery available within Nashville for an additional fee. Shipping available outside of Nashville for an additional fee.

In 1851 Amos Adams Lawrence built a house for himself and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Appleton Lawrence. This photo shows the extreme back of the large house. It is the Boston University Presidents house. The Lawrence’s were famed Abolitionists who financed people to settle in Kansas so that it would not become a slave state. He financed John Brown’s famed raid on Harpers Ferry and gave money to start the University of Kansas, and the city of Lawrence Kansas and Lawrence Massachusetts are named for him. The Lawrence’s also gave money to start what is now Lawrence University in Appleton Wisconsin. It was the second coeducational college in the country. Their house in Brookline is a gothic revival stone affair which is nearly impossible to photograph. It is located just outside of busy Kenmore Square in the quiet Cottage Farm section of Brookline. Amos Lawrence also had a private chapel built onto the house, and a famed collection relating to Abraham Lincoln. #stonework #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #historicpreservation #brickstory #gothicrevival #victorianhouse #brooklinema #gothicrevivalarchitecture #lawrenceks #universityofkansas #lawrenceuniversity

LISTEN UP #52weeksofhomeweek8 because this post is for all the people out there with PAINTED 👏WOODWORK 👏 (get ready for over-generalized statements - I always recommend doing your own research to learn more 🤓)
.
In comparison to a Victorian home, almost everything about a Colonial Revival home is simpler, lighter, and more restrained. This applies to woodwork, too.
.
Every inch of our trim is covered in white paint. And you know what? I prefer the simplicity and brightness of white trim. But when I started this account, there was little love out there for painted trim in old houses. When I did see it, it was sometimes openly derided 😟
.
So for a while I couldn’t shake this feeling that our house was inferior to those coated in intricate, dark woodwork.
.
Then when I was researching Colonial Revival interiors, I came across this sentence from the article “Colonial Revival Interior Design” from @oldhouseonline:
.
“Houses built in the Colonial Revival style had simpler woodwork, often painted in a glossy off-white know as colonial ivory”
.
Now, 1915 they didn’t use super bright white like we have now (@behrpaint ultra pure white FYI) but WHO CARES. Light painted trim in a Colonial Revival is all good I wouldn’t have it any other way ❤️
.
Don’t get me wrong: I appreciate original unpainted woodwork. If you have a Colonial Revival with unpainted woodwork and you love it, that’s awesome 🙌 We have this Craftsman-style tapered newel post that isn't painted and it’s one of my favorite features in the house.
.
But let’s take a moment to ALSO appreciate the positive attributes of painted woodwork and trim. Just because something has a layer of paint on it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t get the love it deserves!

7449 Kingsbury is a house we preformed an entire historic whole house restoration on a couple years ago. I has an amazing street presence and is just a beautiful home. Every fit and finish was done to the highest standard. The stained glass windows in our turrets are one of my favorite features. They’re beautiful in design but they’re also curved! How cool is that? #stainedglass #stainedglasswindow #curvedglass #turret #stairwell #oldhouse #oldhouselove #details #unique #queenannevictorian

I love old houses and buildings, especially on a foggy, rainy, bleak winter day. I always like to imagine the people that lived here.

What were their lives like? What were their hopes and dreams? Even the mundane - what did they eat for supper?

I need to remember to always carry my camera with me to start capturing these places. Some of these old places won't be around for much longer.

It’s the sound of winter easing its grip. Funny, how a morning of snow and ice can feel so much like spring.
