Over under grip and a beanie. It was that kinda day 🦹‍♂️

Ever have days were you just feel like picking shit up, doing some curls, and shooting the shit with people?
_
Tough start today with 5(3)/140kg front squats, but came back in for the evening lift with a better, more relaxed mindset. Didn’t want to bend my knees after heavy squats, so did my behind the neck work (snatch press and snatch push press), followed by some banded deadlifts.
_
It’s been a while since I have pulled over 400lbs for reps, maybe months. Ended up doing this smooth set of 6 at a pretty chill RPE (let’s call it 7). Felt confident could have went 10+ on these. Hard to think a 405lb deadlift was my goal max only a few years ago :)

SPINAL FLEXION DEBATE

The debate about the level of risk associated with loaded spinal flexion is as old as time. McGill, Callaghan, Wade & co. have demonstrated consistently over several in-vitro studies that repeated lumbar flexion leads to disc herniations & end-plate fractures… in pig cadavers. The downfalls of these studies are obvious: they were done on pigs that were not alive. They don’t take into the account the adaptations that humans can make over time.

On the other end of the spectrum, O'Sullivan, Moseley & other pain science pioneers have argued that the man-made fear of spinal flexion has done more harm than good, which is true. This fear of loaded flexion led a lot of people in the health and fitness industry to post videos of the exercise above, which is called the Jefferson curl. It's great to encourage movement because no movement is inherently bad or good without context.
.
When it comes to Jefferson curls, we cannot just say "you are resilient and flex away". We have to take other things into consideration, such as previous exposures to a similar stimulus and also what the person’s goals are. What if the patient just had an acute injury that is flexion intolerant? ‘Flexing away’ will likely do more harm than good.
.
So, what's our take on the debate?
It depends!
.
Are you a powerlifter with a slightly rounded lower back in the deadlift? You could use this movement to build some resiliency but don't make it your main movement. Now, if we look at people who are very upright while performing olympic lifts, then the Jefferson curl may not be so beneficial. It all depends on context and what goals you are trying to accomplish.
.
There is also research to show that even when we attempt to be in neutral during squats or kettlebell swings, we are still in spinal flexion! As with all other things related to health and fitness, it depends.

My lifting percentages this month are dictated by whether my outfit matches the plates.
Trying to catch up on my lifting after an appauling day at work. My first few snatches my mind way so stressed I kept forgetting what lift I was doing between picking the bar up and it getting past my shoulders.
Was switched on a bit better when started clean and jerks. Trying to concentrate on my leg position.
