Dusky shark coming in to nose my dome port. All along the shark’s nose/face are ampullae of lorenzini, small dots that give them the ability to detect electrical signals in the environment, such as the tiny impulses coming from the beating hearts of prey. I try to imagine what it would be like to have that ability, it would be so incredible! And make finding animals to photograph a whole lot easier!! Dusky sharks are one of my favorite sharks to encounter, big wild pelagics that don’t come in often.
dusky sharks have been the highlight of our trips lately, very interactive and such large impressive sharks. They can reach up to 14ft in length and we have had some show up that I would estimate to be 10-11ft. Unfortunately dusky sharks are highly targeted by commercial fishermen for shark fin soup and their numbers worldwide have plummeted. They have a long lifespan of over 50yrs and don’t reach sexual maturity until 20yrs of age and females only give birth once every three years. This makes it very difficult for their populations to rebound from overfishing. NEVER support any restaurant/company that serves shark fin soup and choose your seafood wisely as bycatch also kills millions of sharks a year.
It’s been epic diving lately!! Let me know if you want to come with me! I run small groups out diving with me, as snorkel/freedive trips with sharks up near the surface, you don’t have to be scuba certified. If you're interested in coming out with me to see the sharks shoot me an email for details ChrisGilletteWildlife@gmail.com
I only reply via email for details on price, what you need, and booking.
