How my face looks when I first see the world war II shipwreck below complete with machine gun turret! This is what freediving is all about for me, not the numbers or the depth, but the sheer joy that comes from exploring the underworld. 💙
I get so many messages asking me what my best static breath hold is and how deep have I been, and I get it. It is interesting, but I wonder if people are only asking to measure my worth, for them to be able to place me somewhere on their spectrum. Was my breath hold long enough for you? Can I dive deep enough? Did I impress you or did you sneer and dismiss me and my diving?
For me it's so much more than this and I hate to be reduced to numbers especially because it depends entirely on how you feel that day, what you ate the night before, how well you slept, whether or not you're feeling stressed, anxious or cold. There are so many factors that go into your dive and breath hold performance that each dive can vary greatly.
On good days I can hold my breath for 4.5 minutes, on not so good days it's more like 3.5 (both static). On great days I can dive to 30 metres and beyond, on some days I can get stuck at 6 metres with sticky, painful ears. But then a few dives later I can be back to diving to 30. On good dives I can dive CWT for 2 minutes, on more anxious dives I'll only just make over a minute. The numbers are irrelevant, it's how diving makes you feel that's so important which is why I don't like to check my dive watch until the end of the session otherwise it becomes all about chasing the numbers.
The freedom that arises from being immersed in the big blue is one that makes my heart happy, it's all about the feeling, not the opinions of others on my numbers.
