Heathen Deity is a black metal band from England. They are solitary torch-bearers sworn exclusively to the war against Christianity in a country that, sadly, is seldom mentioned with regard to black metal. Nevertheless, they blaze the way with unending black infernal majesty, and all who stand in their way should tremble in fear.
Their 2002 EP, For the Glory of Satan, has a satisfyingly raw old-school black metal sound, occasionally incorporating elements of death metal riffing and vocals. Although there are plenty of moments where triumphantly evil melodies and harmonies are played at breakneck speeds, plenty of time is spent jamming over catchy, mid-tempo riffs. They often use multiple vocal tracks resulting in a sort of eerie dissonance. Beneath the storm of tortured screams and screeches, you occasionally hear a guttural, demonic, and disgusting unintelligible growl you might expect from Beherit or Archgoat. Additionally, the EP is laced with multiple beautiful acoustic passages, which contrast deeply with the lo-fi insanity yet fit right in perfectly.
Their magnificent 2017 return, Religious Purification through Fire, opts for a cleaner but extremely rich sound. "The Flames of Gathering Darkness" opens with a procession of doomy riffs, each crashing down like the hammer of Thor. This sets the scene for a relatively short but absolutely profound and flawlessly executed black metal experience, similar musically to what is heard on their earlier releases but more refined, declaring blasphemous and hateful war on Christianity and existence itself.
