Congrats to our latest Daffodil Award winner, Karen Torrence. This award recognizes the #outstanding #compassionate care provided by co-workers in support of our nurses. Karen is a unit secretary for #Cardiac Telemetry.
A co-worker nominated Karen by writing: “Not only is Karen dependable for her co-workers, she is also extremely dependable for our patients. Whether it be a cup of water, warm blanket, lights on or off, or a snack, Karen is always willing to jump in and tend to the needs of the patients to the best of her ability… One example that stands out the most is when we had a demented patient who she sat with for a few days… Not only was the patient confused, but his wife lived out of town about two hours away and was not able to be with her husband as much as she liked. Karen took the time to get to know the patient’s likes and interests so she could help ensure the patient was as comfortable as he could possibly be in a foreign place with no family around. She learned that he was an ex-marine who used to garden in his free time and that his favorite foods are cucumbers and sweet potatoes. On a day that Karen was not sitting with the patient, she brought in cucumbers and sliced them. She went into the patient’s room (who no longer had a sitter) and helped feed him the cucumbers she had brought from home. The patient had previously not been eating anything and he was so excited about the cucumbers that he ate every last bite and was able to stay calm and return to sleep afterward.”
