Prince: Come (1994).
Released on this day 24 years ago! This album takes a lot of heat for being a contractual obligation, which may be true, but for me this is a satisfying listen. Yes it's a different listening experience from, say, Purple Rain or Sign O' The Times. Those albums were catchy, with hooky chorus's. Come is not as catchy and is more of jam album. The title track is an extended, sparse, bass heavy jam... with Funkadelic sleigh bells included. Space is a mid-tempo burner with laid back vocals. Pheromone, sung in an intense falsetto and has fuzzy, funky groove. Loose is an all out techno-inspired jam with Prince testing the limits of his voice throughout. Papa is a spoken word tune, that may stand as one of his revealing songs. Race is another sparse jam that reminds me of a tune he could've released in 1985 (and that's a compliment). Dark is a powerful ballad that lives up to it's name. Solo is just that, Prince delivering a beautiful, powerful vocal performance. It's super sparse and is one of my favorite Prince vocals. Letitgo is another mid-tempo, bass heavy jam. The vocals here are layered and showcase Prince's ability as a vocalist. Sure, there are moments where his banter is a little too graphic but I can't let those brief moments take away from the rest of the album.
