Here's a letter I wrote to myself at the beginning of my Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling... That was 2yrs ago and as of yesterday I completed my training with the exception of a case study based on voluntary placement hours (yet to complete).
All course work has been handed in, all essays & contact training hours complete.

The letter we were asked to write to ourselves was with the intention of setting a focus for final 2yrs and as a reflective piece post-training .

At the time of writing this I knew that this training would delve deep into my past in order to forge a new now. I knew at times it would test my resolve, bring discomfort and even pain.

Perhaps there was an expectation when writing this letter that I would look at this in 2 years time and be changed somehow, be different... as it turns out I've just become more me...and I'm OK with that.

In the time since I started Level 2 training in 2016, I have moved house 3 times (one complete relocation). I have lost 2 family members, been through a divorce, run 3 retreats & 3 (200hr) yoga teacher trainings, travelled to far flung places, forged new friendships & relationships (with self & others), rekindled old ones & worked hard to integrate shadows, vulnerabilities & burials from the past.

My 'work' is not done here of course, but I've learned a great deal & unlearned even more and will continue to do so.

I'm looking forward to a future as an Integrative counsellor, working with people to facilitate & support their own becoming. And I'm looking forward to integrate this work within my existing role as Yoga teacher trainer.

Next stop @costa_dulce Nicaragua, as Senior training facilitator for their 200hr Yoga teacher training where I'll be teaching yoga philosophy, asana clinics & yoga for mental & emotion health, August 2 - 25.

I suggest clients make peace with their anxiety and recognize it's trying to tell them something. Acknowledge your resistance to doing something, check to see if there's any actual evidence to support your fear and if possible, give yourself permission to say no, then take an honest look at what the likely consequences of the no will be, and then make your decision. I might not want to speak to someone but recognize if I avoid, I will fill myself with guilt and from that place, decide I don't want to put myself through that and will go ahead and speak to them. A lot of anxiety is anticipatory and once we start doing whatever we were anxious about, the anxiety disappears. These are important things to hold in mind when struggling with anxiety.

“You can do it! You are worth it! I know I am and I know that I can, but I’ve got this feeling that there is something more out there I could be doing”, - an elegant, successful banker in her mid 30s told me. Searching for a greater purpose in life seems to be an issue faced by many successful people at a certain point in their careers, particularly after experiencing emotional burn-out in their current work setting.

While there are many coaching techniques that can be used to explore the question of personal values and purpose -on the cognitive, visual and bodily levels - there are a couple of areas which I consider universally helpful:

1. “Change occurs when one becomes who he is, not when he tries to become what he is not”, - said Arnold Beisser.
Who are you? - is a difficult question to answer as Alice proved in her dialogue with the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland.
What charges you with energy? When do you feel at your best? What work would you choose to do if money was not a concern to you? - asking yourself these questions could be a helpful start.

2. I notice that a lot of people are quite quick to conclude that they need to start their own business as a way to achieve fulfilment in life. While it might be a sensible strategy for some, it comes with a lot of potential risks.
How could I increase the meaning of what I am currently doing without having to quit my current job? - could be a helpful question to ask yourself.

Чем больше человек игнорирует свои чувства, тем более неуправляемыми они становятся. Непризнаваемый "дьявол" неожиданно возникает везде, к большому замешательству и неудобству "ангела". Требуется особая бдительность, чтобы предотвращать нежелательные появления "дьявольской" энергии, даже в ее "ангельских" проявлениях. Хуже того, отказ от " дьявольской" энергии лишает человека веселости и может отобрать у "ангела" ту ловкость, которая ему нужна, чтобы добиваться успеха.
Что и удивляться, что взрослея, большинство людей теряют и веселость, и ловкость. Школа, семья, общество нагружают сознание массой долженствований. Не все они и плохи, но как найти компромисс между тем, что чувствуешь, и тем что должно? Возможен ли компромисс?
Человек, приходящий к терапевту, находится между двумя тенденциями: между тем, каким он должен быть, и тем, каким он является по собственному мнению. Зачастую, ни то, ни другое не является истиной. Довольно часто противоположные части внутри пациента безуспешно пытаются изменить одна другую. Но как гласит парадоксальная теория изменений А. Бейссера: что изменение происходит тогда, когда человек становится тем, кто он есть, а не тогда, когда он пытается быть тем, кем не является.
Окончательная цель терапии состоит в том, чтобы быть собой и быть способным поддерживать близкий контакт с другими.

Instead of looking at our messy homes as a sign of failure, of not living-up to some gold-standard of ‘magical’, pristine, uncluttered palaces; why not reframe the judgement into a more neutral statement, and see what emerges?! You do things until you don’t. Change is actually a choice forged in the fires of your soul.

Some 'new' choices need to be made and acted upon over and over again until your metal is cast and your blade is true.

Keep going. One breath at a time, one step in front of the other. Breathe slowly, deeply and feel your toes.
As you wake up to old programmes that blinkered you, each new choice you take, will liberate your soul.

You will feel more present and embodied, as the path to wholeness & love opens inside you.

In 1970 Arnold Beisser, an influential Gestalt therapist, proposed a so called ‘paradoxical theory of change, whereby “change occurs when a person becomes what he or she is, not when he or she tries to become what (s)he is not". The idea is that exploring what is going on around us ‘here and now’ and deep acceptance of self as you are, results in profound spontaneous change.

But does it mean not taking actions? Or simply “being rather than doing”?

You gotta feel it to heal it 💛
There are no short cuts to complete emotional processing, it’s not linear & sometimes it’s down right painful.
.
In a fast paced world where people are trained to be on the run from anything that hurts, where distraction is rife & pain numbing opportunities are everywhere, it’s no wonder people shy away from deeper healing.
.
But here’s the thing - until we are willing to break cycles, heal trauma (ours & those before us) we continue the cycle, we pass down the behaviours. Until we are willing to feel our own depths, we will never have the capacity to hold space for others. And maybe you don’t want to - and that’s fine. But for those of us in healing spaces & modalities, who are in parental roles, or want deeper relationships - it’s our duty. We must find the courage. Learn to be with pain when it comes, and ride the wave. Become a fertile container for the full human experience. The more we can sit with what is, hold space for our emotions, understand them - the more we learn that they will pass, there’s depth here, there’s beauty here, more than will ever be discovered from a life running from ourselves. .

How does change happen?
Business ethos puts pressure on people grow through a linear A --> Z planned path. Yet most of us know that there is nothing linear about business or personal growth.
More commonly, we hit the same tough spots again and again and beat ourselves up for not being able to rationally plan our way out of it.
I think growth looks more like this plant – a living, unfolding, blossoming, circular and repetitive progression over the same things, with each new pass adding something new to our understanding.
#Gestalt therapy uses a circular map called the #cycleofexperience to explore our pattered blockages to growth.
It maps how your needs form, how you become aware of the need, how you mobilize to have that need met, whether you achieve satisfaction from doing so, and whether you can let it all go so that you have space to welcome the next arising need, and so on and so forth.
If the cycle is interrupted at any point, energy gets bound up, vitality gets diminished and outcomes are unsatisfying. Blockages might look like enthusiastically setting goals but not being able to mobilize energy to accomplish them. Or it could look like setting goals and accomplishing them but never feeling satisfied about the outcome.
Both are interruptions to different stages of the cycle of experience.
Growth doesn’t come from rationally planning what growth should be, it happens from removing what blocks growth from naturally occurring - a bit paradoxical which is why it’s called the #paradoxicaltheoryofchange
