Originally I started this page when my daughter was 1.5yrs old knowing at some point she would have much to say and it would be entertaining. However, at almost 2.5 years old she is in speech therapy 2x a week to help give her that nudge. Such an important lesson to remember, we as parents have to manage our expectations for our kids and meet them where they are at #parentingistough #kidswillbekids #expectations #parentingexpectations #doingourbest #parenting #kids

Before you had children did you ever find yourself mentally raising hypothetical children? The recent ‘10 year challenge’ got me thinking about how life has changed since 2009, including how my views on parenting have changed now I’m actually living it!
For example:
2009: McDonalds will be a treat...
2019: Pretty much every other week we go to McD’s. Frankly I love the McChicken Sandwich and J loves the chicken nugget meal. Meh, there’s worst things in the world. He has vegetables (well the three he’ll eat) and home cooked meals every other day of the week.
Check out our new blog post for more ‘then and nows’ and let me know if there’s any you’ll add to the list...

#truth
If you haven’t listened to yesterday’s episode, we are talking about expectations. There are about 8,637 “expectation/reality” memes about parenting. Because expectations in parenting always play out as meme potential, #amiright? 😂

Parenting expectations vs reality. 😂 running circles around us since day one.
I hope everyone had a wonderful day today with their loved ones. If this year has taught me one thing, it's to be grateful for those close to you. You never know what life is going to throw your way.

After being pregnant, having a light rumble in your tummy is always like your body saying, "Remember that amazing feeling of knowing there's a little life inside of you.....just kidding! you ate too much dairy." .Like.. okay cool, thanks brain, do you really have to go to the 'pregnancy' zone every time? Aren't you the infinitely aware part of my body, getting signals about my cheesy gassiness? Why put me through that? Jerk.
.Ahem. No one without kids will be able to relate to this one. I'm not even sure if other people with kids will relate to it....~~~

I was with the lovely @jomaxwellshow on Friday (watch this space for the result of that meeting) and one of the things that came up during our time was unsaid expectations. It’s not the first time it has come up in my conversations in recent months and I thought I should share some of the ones that I have had since having a baby....
.
A friend’s sister had mentioned that hubby and I should talk about those night sessions and who would do what. She said not having a conversation could lead to a lot of aggro. So we did and have a system that works for us...
.
But I have learnt that there are many expectations and conversations we don’t have or talk about prior to babies showing up. So here are some questions/discussion points...
.
1. Who will do the night shifts? Will we split it? If we split it, how many days will I as the mum do, how many days will you do?
2. Are there expectations of house chores? Who will do what? Will hubby help to clean the house? Will we get cleaners or a nanny? Who will change the baby’s nappy? Are there expectations that the mum will do all the heavy lifting even though she may be healing?
3. Visitors - who is coming to the house when the baby is born? Is it the maternal or paternal grandma? Are there expectations of what the grandma will do? Are there expectations of the new mum to “host?” Should it be best if visitors are kept to a minimum with a limited timescale?
4. How much money are we spending? What is important for us financially in this new season? What’s our budget? .
The list of questions is endless and unique to each family but these are just a few I thought I should share to help anyone who may be having a baby soon...
.
I think a good portion of our postpartum challenges would be halved if we spent time having meaningful conversations. My fellow mums, what say you? Are there more questions to add to this list?

What do you notice when you are about to eat your favourite food? Does it feel familiar? What do you know about the food? What don’t you know about the food? Does it have a smell? How small or big is the smell? Is it smooth or rough to touch? Wet or dry? Firm or soft? What happens when you put it in your mouth and take a bite? Does it feel cold or warm? Is it sweet or savoury? Sour or bitter? Pasty or slippery? What happens when you chew it up? What happens when you swallow?
Hadn’t thought about it that much? These steps and more are what children’s bodies are going through to work out and learn about ALL the different foods their eating! It can be a huge task that needs our understanding and support, specially when they are showing us it’s challenging... Enjoy! LEARNING THROUGH PLAY: Children that are learning to eat and struggle to accept particular foods might find that they are okay to interact with the food when they are no longer EXPECTED to eat it.
This means instead of the EXPECTATION being ‘I have to eat this food’ we can suggest they EXPLORE the foods sensory properties through PLAY - a more gentle, not to mention FUN expectation which is much more conducive to tolerance and acceptance of foods. Who knows, they just might eat it! No Pressure!
Photo credit goes to my dear 7yo son who suggested I take a photo of his spaghetti knots because it might help my work.
Enjoy!

If we expect to come home and be in conflict with us, they probably will. The good news is, once we’re aware of this, we can hold higher expectations.

Being “on time” is a relative concept for us now. #ad

Tonight for me thinking about independence and anxiety.
Rose should be on her way to France right now but instead she is clinging to me for dear life!

Being no stranger to travelling without me, she often goes away with family to our french vacation house no qualms. In the last 5 hours some cord has been struck within her and as a mother i was truely scary to see. Shaking in fear, panic, heart racing and torn in two trying to understand the emotions. Wanting to go yet not being able to physically let go of me.
I have never forced rose to do something she doesn't want and never would, but sometimes she does need the encouragement to find her footing, and the umph to give it a go, yet tonight was unreal and a true eye opening for me, to see a vunerability and uncertainty. You don't really associate anxiety and panic attacks with humans so young and has truely made me take a look at what we assume our kids can cope with, it goes to show even if they have done it many times before subject is really capable to change.
So if you need me I will be holding her as tight as I can, for as long as I can and as long as she needs ♥️♥️
