Video by @pedromcbride // A day in the life of wildlife conservations and veterinarian @andre_uys_vet working with @africanparksnetwork employing radio tracking devices to protect rhinos from illegal poaching. In the last decade, over 7,000 African Rhinos were lost to poaching and last year, South Africa alone lost over 1,000 rhinos, roughly three animals a day. These illegal killings is fueled by the rhino horn which is made up entirely of keratin, the same as toenails. Nonetheless, the illegal wildlife market has created a huge demand for rhino horn, buoyed by an inaccurate belief they cure cancer, making horns more valuable than gold. @pedromcbride “Mr. Peter, you worry too much”, my Indian friend Madhav said. “Worry is praying for what you don’t want.” At that point, on the banks of the Ganges River while doing a story for @natgeotravel about yoga, I realized that Madhav was the hero of my piece — standing in front of me. The beauty and challenging part of storytelling is sometimes being patient enough to realize the story will find you, if you don’t look past it. I’m honored and inspired to be teaching this week for @aspenwords. #India #yoga #don’tworry #travel #gratitude 📷 #petemcbride

The elusive wave: Every few years, the cosmos align, mixing snow pack and cold runoff to form the endless, soulful wave in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The exit can be exciting, the passing trees challenging, but the long rides on the "American Nile" are always memorable and humbling. #ColoradoRiver #surfing #chasingrivers #water 📸 by #PeteMcBride @pedromcbride

@pedromcbride Reflecting on northern Kenya; I’ve visited this part of the world for years and watched it go from a conflict zone to a model of conservation. I had the privilege to share stories and short films (coming shortly) alongside the heroes of @nrt_kenya last night at @natgeo. As the head of NRT says, “Wildlife conservation is ultimately about people.” #humbled #nature #wildlife #conservation #kenya #Africa @usaaid @amivitale 📷 #petemcbride @pedromcbride

Solstice Smooch: On this longest day of the year, let’s celebrate our long necked friends — giraffes which amazingly have seven vertebrae like us —just much larger. Despite their graceful beauty and evolutionary marvels like leathery tongues that can munch acacia thorns, giraffes are facing unprecedented population drops throughout Africa from habitat loss, fragmentation and poaching. Follow @giraffe_conservation to learn more, get involved, and help them stick their necks out to understand what is happening to these lofty, wonderful creatures. According to some historians, early accounts of surfing may have influenced Thomas Jefferson to write "the pursuit of happiness" into the Declaration of Independence as an “unalienable right.” True or not, “riding the hand of Mother Nature,” as some describe it, can induce fear and smiles alike. Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride || #Powell150 |John Wesley Powell reached Echo Park, the confluence of the Green and Yampa rivers, on June 18th, 1869. Though he had only one arm, Powell and expedition member Bradley set out to climb “Steamboat Rock” (center of photo).⠀

Had it not been for a sturdy pair of pants, Powell's journey might have ended right then and there:⠀

“I fear I cannot hold on to it...It is sixty or eighty feet to the foot of the precipice. If I lose my hold I shall fall to the bottom...At this instant it occurs to Bradley to take off his drawers, which he does, and swings them down to me. I hug close to the rock, let go with my hand, seize the dangling legs, and, with his assistance, I am enabled to gain the top.” - John Wesley Powell, June 18, 1869 ⠀

Almost 100 years later, Echo Park was threatened by a proposed dam. Conservationists opposed it, in part because it would encroach on Dinosaur National Monument. The fight led to a compromise which allowed for the construction of Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River downstream.⠀

💭 Photo by @pedromcbride | With roughly 5,000 left in the wild, the black rhino continues to face extreme poaching dangers for its horn that is biologically no different than a toenail. Amazingly, one place is bucking the trend. @lewa_wildlife has not lost a rhino, thanks to a network of protectors and protection that enable rhinos like Wai Wai and her baby to thrive. Amazed to witness Lewa evolve from a cattle ranch to a wildlife sanctuary that now boasts 14 percent of Kenya's rhino population (black and white). Summertime… A Rocky Mountain Toad glides down the Little Colorado River like a queen. This shot from my book “GrandCanyon- BetweenRiver and Rim” (now in its third printing - link in bio) — makes me smile. Reposted from @pedromcbride - The Big Blue — Happy #WorldOceansDay. I’ve spent hours being humbled by our ocean’s. They deserve more than one day a year to remind us of their importance — and their challenges. With growing pressures from climate change and acidification bleaching coral reefs to now plastic that is predicted to outnumber fish by 2050, our big blue seas need a big hand. One simple thing we can can all do is avoid single-use plastic and carry reusable water bottles. Only 9% of all plastic gets recycled so I try to limit my plastic use as much as possible by carrying re-usable bottles. Thanks @sealegacy and @lonelywhale for your work. #planetnotplastic #archive 📷 by #petemcbride #mantaray #love #your #world #💙 #sea

Water is Life | #Powell150 (3/14) | By June 6th, 1869, John Wesley Powell and his crew were only two weeks into their historic journey down the Colorado River. As I follow their journey’s ebbs and flows with @americanrivers, we are reminded that Powell wasn’t just an adventurer. He was also a scientist with forward-thinking ideas about how we should manage rivers and water in the arid west. He wrote, “All winter long, on its mountain-crested rim, snow falls, filling the gorges, half burying the forests, and covering the crags and peaks with a mantle woven by the winds from the waves to the sea — a mantle of snow. When the summer-sun comes, this snow melts, and tumbles down the mountain-sides in millions of cascades. Ten million cascade brooks unite to form ten thousand torrent creeks; ten thousand torrent creeks unite to form a hundred rivers beset with cataracts; a hundred roaring rivers unite to form the Colorado, which rolls, a mad, turbid stream, into the Gulf of California.” Today, hundreds of diversions capture water for irrigation, transforming much of the Rocky Mountain West since Powell first floated through the upper Basin States. The resulting water allocation has enabled growth and development across the Rockies so many can enjoy the fruits of this arid landscape. However, the rivers shoulder much of the strain, as many upper basin tributaries are often depleted — some, like the Crystal, frequently run dry by late summer. There are 22 trans-basin diversion projects that carry water from the Colorado River Basin through the Continental Divide to Colorado’s front range and the Mississippi Basin. #water 📷 #petemcbride

Happy World Environmental Day — a reminder to cherish our fragile ecosystem that keeps our fragile species, and many more, going. Recent predictions say that the planet will carry on but it won’t include us and many of the wild critters that share our big blue home if we don’t act soon and change our consumptive habits. Our current human activity could lead to the extinction of one million species — many of which a play a role in our food and water systems — so helping biodiversity, helps us. Get involved today. Learn more how to support and engage either in your back yard or beyond with the many conservation organizations around the world working to build a future for us all.
