Even if I am running the risk of repeating myself, I would like to stress once again, that it is absolutely astonishing how fast the little emperor chicks are growing up. Just a little over two months ago they were in a quite helpless state, needing protection in the warm #broodpouch of their parents at all times. This photo was taken roughly a week or so after the first chicks had hatched and only had very little down and almost no fat. They still rely on getting fed by their parents, but now they are round (or pear shaped) and #fluffy, running around and exploring the colony or hanging out with their peers in creches. In the past two weeks they have started lying on their bellies or sleeping while standing up with their little beaks tucked underneath their little flippers. In many ways they are already behaving like their parents, just lack the size and the feathers. We have a little more than a week of filming left and I really wonder what they will look like when we leave. Probably taller than I am anticipating now :-).

Whenever we have a #storm the wind is almost always coming from the East. One behavior of the penguins that we have witnessed numerous times is, that they will turn their back towards the wind (which is quite the natural reaction I suppose, since nobody likes having cold snow blown in their face). Consequently, during storms they will be facing West and slowly the wind will push them towards the ice shelf. A few weeks ago after a long storm we stayed on the ice shelf in order to get an #elevated perspective of the colony. We found the emperor penguins standing right underneath the shelf where they had been pushed by the wind and were finally getting a day off the bad weather. As they were preening and relocating their huddle position it made for some nice photo ops with a top down view and a slow shutter. I really like the result, which makes the penguins look a little bit like an #antcolony :-).

Wind, wind, wind. The past days have been extremely windy and I cannot recall one day, that we spent outside without drifting snow. In fact, I believe that wind speeds never dropped below 20 knots in the past two weeks, which is quite windy already if you are not usually living at the coast. However, with the temperatures having warmed up, it is weather that we can film in, albeit not a very pleasant experience (especially not if you spend 10h out in the cold). The only nice thing about the wind is that it will create a wonderful mood on the sea ice on a sunny day. Penguins silhouetted against the drifting snow of a sastrugi covered landscape just look stunning and I can’t stop taking photos of it :-). Fingers crossed that the winds will subside and that Antarctic weather will show us at least a few nice days during the final three weeks of our filming. Hard to believe that this shoot is coming to an end, but I’d be lying if I said, I wasn’t looking forward to returning home after over 10 months ;-).

I know you should never count your chickens before they’re hatched, but it certainly has warmed up considerably during the past few weeks. Even on clear days temperatures do not drop below -30°C anymore in Atka Bay (even though we did have two really cold days about a week ago that started out below -30°C, but then settled in around -27°C). It’s a much welcomed change, since operating camera and film equipment becomes so much easier in these mild conditions. In fact, we have gotten so used to the obstacles one has to overcome on super cold days, that everything feels rather easy at the moment. I believe that by having to endure all the hardships of operating photo equipment during the Antarctic winter, I have become better at my craft and will be able to profit from this gain in experience in mild climates in the future.
The only downside to the warm weather is, that we are not going to see the emperor penguins breath anymore. You can only see these beautiful structures on clear and cold days with a low Sun. They say every emperor penguin has its very own and unique call and while I am unable to show you the acoustics of their call in an image, at least I can show you its very distinct visual representation :-).

This image was taken exactly five years ago on a beautiful morning that my fellow winterers and I spent on the sea-ice. We were all having a great time at the penguin colony and witnessed many chick huddles, so called creches, in which the young emperor penguins organize. The huddle itself is the penguins secret weapon against the cold and it is a technique which is crucial to their survival in a hostile place like Antarctica. Consequently, the young chicks need to learn early on how a huddle is formed and operated. While their parents are very well organized and calm when huddling, the chicks are not quite as experienced. It cracks me up when some of them believe the way to the warm center of the huddle is not by patiently waiting until it is their turn, but by running towards the huddle and then leaping right into the middle. I have seen so many of these fluffballs crowd-surfing on their peers already and trust me, it’s the cutest thing you could ever see. They are quite forgiving so there are no hard feelings after somebody has obtained a spot in the middle with the aforementioned technique, but eventually they will all learn how to make it fair to everybody. I am not sure I will be able to improve on this photo in 2017, but I will certainly keep on trying. In the meantime, I hope this image makes you smile as much as it makes me smile every time I look at it :-).

Even very early in the morning the Sun is already pretty high in the sky and there is no doubt that we are rapidly approaching polar day. Thankfully, this means that the temperatures are increasing as well. We did have a couple of -35°C days in the last two weeks, but the worst should be over now. For the emperors this means that energy is not as sparse anymore as it was during mid winter and with the colony spread out over a larger area, they have accumulated in different groups. For penguins returning from the sea this means, that they usually will have to visit more than one group in order to find their chick and their mate until they find each other. Once they are done investigating a particular group, they will move on to the next, but not without a group of begging chicks behind them. The chicks will try everything to get food even from birds other than their parents and they will only give up on a particular bird once it has ventured further away from the group. This is the reason why we are currently seeing a lot of single adults with a flock of chicks following them around for a while, until they turn around and start heading back to their group.

We’re still seeing emperor penguins facing each other, both having chicks on their feet and calling and bowing to each other. I call these encounters play dates, since it reminds me of two parents letting their kids play, while they are getting to know each other as well. Biologically it is quite interesting and I wish I’d knew why they do it. I’ve contacted experts in the field in order to find out more about it, but maybe somebody here knows the deeper meaning of this behavior? Anyway, it is still really enjoyable to watch, especially if one chick is in the brood pouch head first. The other chick will then regularly peck it in the butt until it finally turns around and starts calling as well. The boldness of the chicks does crack me up and just wait until I will show you the creches. They’re even more fun :-).

Here we are on Christmas Eve 2014 anchored for the night at Neko Harbour, Antarctica. What a Christmas present that was, it doesn't come much better!
