📙 Duncan Macmillan "Every Brilliant Thing"
Every Brilliant Thing is a solo audience interactive show discussing suicide in the life time it takes our narrator to write a list of all the worlds brilliant things.
Powerful freakin concept!
I was so excited to read this play as I'd heard such great things, but it fell short of my expectation.
There was nothing wrong with it. The piece is well written, strong structure, and ebbing flow. The list format and the integration of facts is strong.
But that's the thing, it was just good. While I was reading I felt numb and emotionless. As this is a piece of theatre I dont believe its the intention of the playwright to make us disconnect with the only character onstage.
Incorrectly my initial note was "something I'm interested in watching (for the right price) but not putting on myself." I was wrong.
Currently my partner and I are working away at staging part of this text. Once reading it out loud, then memorising it the piece becomes so much more engaging.
As I am now relating to it as a performer instead of a viewer it's hard to say whether I have a new relationship or an altered relationship. But it just goes to show that plays are meant to be performed, or at the very least read aloud.
