I was sitting in the deepening dusk by the still pool that would soon be completely snow covered and listening to the earth tell me about polar bears. I had recently heard polar bears described as the most courageous of mammals. Because of their courage, they are also incredibly curious, comfortable with whatever unknown thing comes into their world. And these brave, inquisitive creatures are disappearing. This makes me incredibly sad. We need their medicine in this time, for they show us that we do not need to fear that which is new and strange, and that we can be strong even when occasionally something proves unworthy of our trust. Are we vulnerable when we emulate the polar bear? Perhaps. But perhaps vulnerable is the most courageous way to be.
