Photo by @lynseyaddario | A mother of seven, Ayesha Ciisa, 33, arrived at Borama Regional Hospital in Somaliland near death after delivering one of two twins at home. She came to the hospital by auto-rickshaw when the second baby could not be delivered in her village. Despite Ciisa’s severe bleeding, doctors were able to save her with a transfusion. During my career as a photojournalist I have documented maternal mortality across the developing world, but for my most recent @natgeo story, "Giving Life Can Still Be Deadly," I spent several months focusing on this issue at home in the U.S. and in Somaliland. The U.S. is one of only two developed countries where the rate of women dying from pregnancy has gotten worse since 1990. The rate of maternal deaths remains stubbornly high in the United States: about 14 deaths for every 100,000 live births. Black mothers are particularly at risk. Better basic care could help, as it has in the developing world.

At the World’s End | Photograph by Jonathan Z. Lee (@jonathanzlee)
“South Georgia is as wild as it gets. It is also a challenging place to photograph. How do you do such a place justice? How do you find a singular story amidst the chaos of thousands upon thousands of creatures in one place?,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Jonathan Z. Lee. “These three penguins were a gift — perched on a rock in the middle of a shallow pool, surrounded by their comrades and the dramatic peaks in the background just as the light was breaking through. They did not mind my company and happily let me shoot at 24mm.”

“I love #YourShotPhotographer Stephanie Thomson’s comment: ‘This is such a beautiful moment worth waiting for Jonathan. I can feel the love and sense of protection coming from the penguins as they stand alone on that rock. The slight sunburst and break in the clouds is an excellent frame that emphasizes your subjects beautifully. I also love your title, as if these penguins are huddling together at the World’s End. Beautiful work!” — @natgeoyourshot Producer David Y. Lee (@davidylee)

The World at Night project
A couple of nights ago in a remote corner of the Death Valley, California, one of the driest places on the planet and a vast Dark Sky Park, where natural night is protected from light pollution. Stars of Orion, the Hunter, are the icons of the winter sky, next to Sirius, the brightest star in the Earth night sky. The yellow glow on the horizon, from the surprising distance of 150 miles, is the light of Los Angeles.

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPjoyful
This weekend the challenge is to make images and videos that capture a spirit of joy, as in this featured photo from Tony Noël (@tony_noel). Here are some tips to get you started:
Head out. Think about the places you go that make you feel free and joyful. Set up an excursion — it can be solo or with a group of friends — to take pictures, make videos and enjoy the day.
Express your joy. Get creative with the action in your submission and think about the actions that bring you joy — like dancing, drawing and hiking — or express an emotional release, like a big belly laugh.
Consider symbols. Birds in flight, flowers and hearts, the wind in your hair, tossing leaves into the air, or even something as simple as your body language can express joy and freedom.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPjoyful hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. By adding the #WHPjoyful hashtag, you consent to and grant Instagram all rights to repost your photo or video. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend with the #WHPjoyful hashtag is eligible for the project and, if selected, to be featured next week.

@salvarezphoto | In Southern Utah, three female figures have stood overlooking the canyon for millennia. Imagine the changes they have seen: Drought, flood, cultures come and go; villages flourish and then are abandoned; native peoples replaced by Europeans looking for gold, oil, gas, uranium. These paintings stand as witnesses. They were made by the Basketmakers, a culture that collectively spanned the introduction of corn into the Southwest. I shot them scouting for a @natgeo grant and an @ancientartarchive project looking at art both in and left out of Bears Ears National Monument. #utah
