WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is a chronic (long term) condition marked by abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose)in the blood.
People with diabetes either do not produce enough insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life, or cannot use the insulin that their bodies produce.
CLASSES OF DIABETES
TYPE 1 DIABETES: Where the Pancreas is unable to produce Insulin.
TYPE 2 DIABETES: Where the Pancreas produces insulin but low levels or the cells in the body do not respond to the insulin present(Insulin resistance) .
GESTATIONAL DIABETES: which occurs in women during pregnancy.
SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES INCLUDE:
Frequent Urination (Polyuria)
Increased Thirst (Polydipsia)
Increased Hunger (Polyphagia)
Male Sexual dysfunction
Unexplainable weight gain or loss etc
WHO IS AT RISK?
1. Those genetically predisposed; Diabetes can be inherited (Type 1 Diabetes)
2. Over weight or obese individuals
3. Those involved in Sedentary Lifestyle (drinking/ eating food with high sugar, food with high sugar or calorie content such as soft drinks/beverages, junk foods etc
