Let’s chat real quick about ACHIEVEMENT ADDICTION.
When we accomplish something or mark something off of our to do list, dopamine is released in our brains (the same chemical that makes drugs like heroin feel good).
So, it’s REALLY EASY to develop a unhealthy RELIANCE on that feeling. And because society rewards achievement, it appears as though there’s nothing wrong.
But the thing is, when we DEPEND on our work or accomplishments to feel okay with ourselves or our life, we are wading in treacherous territory.
Here’s how I know this is something I have fallen prey to: I am leaving for Hawaii in a couple of days and honestly wish I could stay here and keep working... Yikes!
There will be no accomplishing or achieving in Hawaii and that’s a withdrawal I am not prepared for.
But luckily, I will have 10 relaxing days to process this, rewire my brain’s chemistry and learn to be more present, joyful and ALIVE.
Okay. Be radically honest. Have you ever struggled with this too? How does it manifest? And how do you ween yourself off of this toxic pattern?
