Bridges Community Action Partnership is a private nonprofit community action agency dedicated to helping and serving low-income individuals and families in Madison, Champaign, Delaware, Union, Shelby, and Logan counties. Bridges helps improve the lives of individuals and families by providing a variety of programs and assistance with utilities, home improvement, family development, work resources, safe housing, financial education, and medical needs.
Bridges provides a program called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) which is dedicated to save local residents tax preparation fees while maximizing all applicable tax credits so taxpayers can receive the highest refund. This organization seeks to educate individuals on how to utilize their tax refunds to better prepare for unexpected expenses so they are less reliant on community services and are able to become more self-sufficient.
In 2017, Bridges provided assistance to over 3,500 Madison county residents with their many educational and financial programs. In that same tax season, their VITA Program refunded over $775,000 in federal refunds to Madison county residents and saved local residents over $100,000 in tax preparation fees. These residents also received over $288,500 in earned income credits.
To be eligible one must live in one of the six counties Bridges serves (Madison, Champaign, Logan, Union, Delaware, and Shelby), and meet one of the following qualifications: annual income of less than $55,000 or someone who is over the age of 60 (regardless of income). Services for those who are eligible include: Free tax preparation services from IRS-certified volunteers, a free credit report, and direct deposit refund, which is available 7 to 10 days after submitting refund. Tax preparation services are offered from mid-January through mid-April at multiple locations throughout Ohio. Appointments are strongly encouraged, but walk-ins are welcomed.
