When I was pregnant with Asher I developed gestational diabetes. I remember feeling completely caught off guard. I ate “healthy”. I worked out. I didn’t have any of the “risk factors” I had reviewed in my thousand Google searches, so why was this happening?
Flash forward to last fall, I was taking part in a series of courses in holistic nutrition, and we were learning about Vitamin D. I had just had blood work done not too long before and had learned I was Vitamin D deficient (which is particularly common in the northern states). That evening our instructor rattled off a list of symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency, one of them being an increased risk of gestational diabetes. A light bulb went on for me. Was this a factor in my development of this condition?
While I may never know for sure, it certainly got me thinking more about what my body needs as we prepare for hopefully growing our family here in the near future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s important that our bodies always have sufficient vitamins and minerals, but it’s even more imperative during pregnancy. Our needs for things like iron, folate, calcium, choline, DHA and Vitamin D often increase when pregnant. One of the best ways we can get many of these vitamins and minerals is through the foods we consume. For instance, leafy greens are packed with iron & calcium. Eggs are an excellent source of choline. And a variety of nuts and seeds boast a hefty dose of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
#ad In addition to consuming these nutrient rich foods, I still plan on taking a prenatal vitamin next time around to fulfill the additional needs my body may require. And just like the food I eat, it’s important for me to know that the ingredients in my vitamin are both clean and high quality like those I know are used in the prenatals developed by @premamawellness. Not all prenatals are created equal all, and when our body is working hard to create a new life- it’s so important we give it the support it needs and deserves. Thankful for companies like this who truly seek to put those needs for both us and our babes at the forefront. #premamawellness #premamajourney #expectbetter
