Sometimes the best vantage point to a tidal glacier is from a small iceberg in front of it. It is not really recommended to stand on icebergs, they can roll over and then you end up in the freezing water. Got us a nice picture though.

He took Ørgreen Tamok snow goggles on his expedition as well. “I wanted to create a project that would inspire people to action. It is of course difficult to talk about climate change as it is kind of depressing subject, but if we can create a positive touch point then hopefully that is a start.” #orgreenoptics #tamokbyorgreen #projectpressure

A couple of years ago, Project Pressure director Klaus Thymann went to Mount Stanley, Uganda, which is located in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO world Heritage Site. The peak and several other surrounding peaks are high enough to support glaciers. With an elevation of 5,109 m, it’s the third highest mountain in Africa.

Donne Glacier descends the spectacular east face of Mount Tutoka in southwest New Zealand. The glacier has been undergoing rapid retreat this decade creating a new alpine lake. The National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA) conducts an annual survey of the snowline of New Zealand glaciers. In order to thrive a glacier must have at 50-70% of its area snowcovered at the end of the summer melt season. For NZ glaciers NIWA has noted 67% as the key to equilibrium conditions. If the snowline is above normal the glacier will lose mass, if the snowline is lower than normal the glacier will gain mass. #climatechange #projectpressure #glacier #mountains #landscapephotography #klausthymann

Director of Project Pressure, Klaus Thymann has undertaken expeditions to
many remote areas. Part of the reason for this is to show the diversity of where
glaciers exist and how climate change will have a global impact on water resources and
more. This image is of Mount Sabalan in Iran - a
dormant volcano with the crater now being a small lake that freezes in winter.

I still dream about this place. A few years back I spent three weeks in Svalbard based in a remote Polish Polar Station in the Hornsund fjord.
Many days were spent alone, trekking for miles across barren terrain searching for unique glacial vantage points. Some days i would join a glaciologist to check on their monitoring equipment high up on the Hansbreen glacier. Never have I felt more detached from the modern world. It was beautiful.

The front of Esmarkbreen, a tidal glacier on Svalbard named after Jens Esmark, a Danish-Norwegian professor (1763 – 1839) who contributed to many of the initial analyses of glaciers, specifically the concept that glaciers had covered larger areas in the past. Svalbard sits in the Arctic Ocean, which has and currently is experiencing significant effect of climate change. The artist Corey Arnold is a part time fisherman so photographing from the sea is only natural for him.

Scott Conarroe’s work evokes the tradition of 19th century landscape paintings while visualising current border shifts in relation to receding glaciers. His massive prints are overwhelming in detail, and make for a very different view in person as opposed to on a small, square screen. Don’t miss a chance to see them live if you can!

The result of RGB tricolor separation can be seen in this comparative shot. In reality this is three shots mixed together, where Red, Green and Blue add up to natural colours when nothing has changed, the RGB seperation shows where the landscape is in flux. Shadows from clouds, trees moving in the wind and more will all show up as colour seperation.

@klausthymann shot this out of an open door on a hovering helicopter, it is the front of the Jakobshavn glacier in Greenland. The wall is about 70 m high. This glacier is amongst if not the most active in the world producing 10% of all of Greenland's icebergs. The glacier moves forward at an average of 20 m per day.

From Thursday you can see this image and others at Museum of Climate Change in Hong Kong all part of @projectpressure

Many years in the making, a collaboration with @projectpressure entitled “Vanishing Glaciers” is opening this Thursday at the Museum of Climate Change in Hong Kong @mocc_cuhk Included are images from my expedition in a remote region of Svalbard, Norway called Hornsund, three weeks stay at the Polish Polar Station. This is the start of many upcoming exhibitions featuring the work of myself, @klausthymann @peterfunch @simonnorfolkstudio Scott Canarroe and Michael Benson among others to help bring awareness to climate change issues through art.

Corey Arnold collaborated with scientists who helped him get to see the glacier fronts. Getting to a good vantage point to photograph a glacier sometimes involves sailing in small rubber-boats, or walking which we do a lot. See his work and more at the @projectpressure presentation Vanishing Glaciers at the Museum of Climate Change in Hong Kong.

Jointly organized by the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change and UK-based non-profit arts organization Project Pressure, an exhibition on the theme ‘Vanishing Glaciers’ will present a new way of showing comparative images from 1946, 1959, 1980 and 2017 of the Tarfala Valley, Sweden by using photogrammetry created 3D models. The Exhibition will be held from 22 March till 30 June 2018. Don’t miss it!

A few years ago Corey Arnold went on an expedition to Svalbard to photograph the tidal glaciers there. See the work and more at the presentation Vanishing Glaciers at the Museum of Climate Change in Hong Kong opening on Thursday.

#EmmaStibbon has recently returned from a research trip to #Ecuador where she has been invited by @projectpressure to respond to the shrinking glaciers on the high volcanoes of the Sierra. Stibbon is pictured here on an inactive volcano, #Chimborazo, the highest peak in Ecuador.
#ProjectPressure is a charity that collaborates with world-renowned artists to create work that depicts, firsthand, the environmental impact of climate change

“When I am Laid in Earth” … A visualisation of the receding Lewis Glacier on Mt. Kenya. A mapping of “time’s thickness” by pyrographically documenting glacial retreat.
Using long exposures made in the middle of the night, the resultant images stem from the simple act of walking with fire along the glacier’s previous boundaries - by working out GPS coordinates from old maps…
And fire, the primordial element that first provided a gathering point for human culture and, through the burning of fossil fuels, a rapidly changing climate.

The flame line in this image shows the Lewis Glacier’s location in 1987. The pond is called the Curling Pond. In 1987 it’s surface was 15m higher than it currently is, penned in by a high back-wall of ice - the glacier’s snout. The glacier has since receded about 120m.

I won a Sony World Press Award and a LensCulture Earth Award for these images that helped win a lot of publicity for Project Pressure, the small NGO who commissioned the original project.
