A Rafflesia pricei flower glows like a christmas decoration on the dark rainforest floor. This parasitic flowering plant is endemic to Borneo and named after botanist William Price, who discovered the species on Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu in the 1960s. The flowers smell like rotting flesh, hence its local names which translate to "corpse flower" or "meat flower". Stoked to get a photo of this adorable teardrop butterflyfish couple💙 (Chaetodon unimaculatus)~ Even if only one of them was looking😃 These cuties are called kīkākapu in Hawaiian. They can be found throughout the Indo-Pacific, except for the western Indian Ocean.🌏 They occur in reef flats, clear lagoons and seaward reefs.🌊 The teardrop butterflyfish attains a size of 8 inches; they are monogamous and form distinct breeding pairs.👫 This species is known to prey mainly on coral polyps, but also consumes polychaete worms, small crustaceans and filamentous algae.🌱

Oh Sweden, you are very dear to us... Here, a part of our project ”Postcards from the North”. People sometimes ask us about how it is to work in all the exotic places we get to travel to. And yes, it is fantastic! And important! But at the same, this is our habitat, our natural backyard, as exotic as any rainforest or coral reef. #lappland #art #sweden #artistduoalexandrovklum #protectbiodiversity #nikonambassadors @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumofficial

A female polar bear greets one of her cubs near the gorgeous Nordenskiöld Breem, Svalbard Norway. Polar bear cubs drink their mother's milk and depend on her for survival for at least 20 months. Her hunting skill and success is critical for her own survival and for feeding and teaching her cubs to find food for themselves. According to scientists like Alison Ames, Polar bears may be just as smart as some apes. Their success at hunting seals in a dynamic arctic environment is one sign of their brain power. This is learned behavior and reveals that polar bears are very intelligent animals. They are highly cognitive creatures that top the food chain in polar regions. You have to be very clever to do that. Hunting and trapping a seal is not necessarily easy. #svalbard #polar #polarbears #arctic #protectbiodiversity #stopclimatechange #expedition #mattiasklum #cubs #mom #IQ #EQ #mattiasklumworkshop #nikonambassador #predator #norway #savethearctic #wwf #iucn #wildlife #wild_land #wild___land #ocean #the_earth #photographer #photography#best_photo #best_photogram #animal #animal #love_animals @mattiasklumofficial @alexandrovklumofficial @thephotosociety @natgeotravel @natgeo

A river segment from above in the gorgeous Okavango delta in Botswana. This wetland is flushed yearly by approximately 11 cubic kilometers of water. A healthy delta is not only interesting and beautiful but provides numerous ecosystem services for mankind. The rich biodiversity of all reserves and national parks in Africa is actually critical for landscape resilience, which contributes to the stability of the Earth system! #protectbiodiversity #mattiasklum #okavango #botswana #africa #alexandrovklum #resilience #conservation @natgeo @thephotosociety @alexandrovklumofficial @irisalexandrov

Raja Ampat, Indonesia, one of the richest marine ecosystems in the World. The reefs below the surface are home to more than 1500 species of fish and around 700 species of reef-building coral, and counting...! Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to see another marine realm off the coast of Fiji!
By preserving and respecting the remaining beauty on this planet we actually secure long term sustainable success for mankind! @Regran_ed from @mattiasklumofficial - I took this photograph in Svalbard near the Nordenskiöldbreen (Nordenskiöld Glacier). Roughly 60% of the Svalbard archipelago is still covered with glaciers and the islands feature many fjords, mountains and on top of this a relatively healthy polar bear population. Protected areas make up 65% of this unique archipelago.

A Yellow-headed Caracara up close performing a call in the lowland rainforest at Metropolitan Nature Park.

These raptors often perches at treetops in small groups. It also patrols along roads and rivers, searching for dead animals, and it follows the ploughs in order to catch the small disturbed animals.

Repost from @mattiasklumofficial // Some good news!!! ”Forty years ago, Dian Fossey and the world were devastated when a family of mountain gorillas — named Group 4 — was decimated by poachers. Group 4 was the very first group of gorillas to be studied by Dr. Fossey after she established the Karisoke Research Center and included individuals like Uncle Bert, who she named after her own uncle, and Digit, the first gorilla to accept her presence.” Over the course of 1978, four gorillas in Group 4 were killed by poachers and another three died as a result of the group’s disruption. By December of that year, only three of the original 11 group members remained together.
With her beloved Group 4 destroyed, and the mountain gorilla population headed toward a low point of only about 240 individuals, Fossey feared the species would go extinct before the year 2000.
Instead, today, due to the intensive protection efforts Fossey initiated, mountain gorillas have reached a new historic milestone: their numbers have gradually increased over the past 30 years, and are up from 240 to 604, based on the latest census. (Another separate population of 400 individuals bring the total number of mountain gorillas to just over 1,000). I photographed this magnificent mountain gorilla in the Volcanos National Park, Rwanda.
