So it was my birthday last week and I realised that as I get older I spend more and more birthdays wondering where all that time has gone and what the hell i’ve been doing with it! This year I was in good company as I followed the introspections of Arthur Less who attempts to outrun his fiftieth birthday by undertaking a glorious round the world trip. If only!

A mediorcre novelist, Less accepts a number of mid level writing engagements that take him to places like Germany, France, Japan, and springboard him into a holiday in the middle of the desert in Morocco. While travelling, he reflects on his career and comes to the conclusion that he’s not really a particularly good writer, just the ex-partner of a truly great one. Ouch! As well as the encroaching years, Less is also trying to avoid the wedding of his ex-lover Freddie and the novel goes down one memory rabbit hole after another as he reflects on past loves and losses.

This novel is a truly charming one and you can’t help but feel protective over Arthur Less, with his naive meanderings through the world. It’s just the sort of novel I like - one that quietly speaks to us about the multifacets of the human heart. Gently told and softly humorous, it’s the perfect antidote to the sharp edges of this world.

So y’all know I’m a big fan of theatre and couldn’t miss August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean.” All his plays inspire me to be as great of a writer as he is!🤗. In this particular play, he unfolds the African American legacy in a soaring mystical tale of a man so desperate for redemption that he went looking for a soul cleanser, Aunt Ester! And there, the spiritual journey begins! Showing until nov. 22 at a noise within theatre 🎭 #arts #theatre #plays #gemoftheocean #pasadena #california #actress #playwright #screenwriter #entertainment #movies #tv #greatcast #love #actorslife #augustwilson #inspirational #pulitzerprizewinner

#MondayAuthorWisdom💬 “But he was fighting for the dignity of man and i that way he was fighting for himself. If men were equal in America, all the former Poles and English and Czechs and blacks, then they were equal everywhere, and there was really no such thing as foreigner; there were only free men and slaves. And so it was not even patriotism but a new faith. The Frenchman may fight for France, but the American fights for mankind, for freedom; for the people, not the land.”
-Michael Shaara ‘The Killer Angels’

The other day I saw @thebristolreader had posted a #mypulitzerstack (created by @podsticles) and I thought to myself I must have three or four lying around......erm turns out I have a...few.
.
The first photo (me standing) is all the winners I’ve already read, and the second photo (me sitting) is all the winners I have on my TBR. I have absolutely loved every Pulitzer winner I’ve read, turns out we get along.
.
Just like with The Stella and The Miles Franklin and unlike the Booker and the Women’s (usually, with a few exceptions over the years).
.
It makes me want to set a challenge for myself to read all the Pulitzer winners, if I get through the ones on my TBR I’ll be close to a quarter of the way through 😆 #readthepulitzer might be a frequent hashtag for me next year 🙌
.
How about you? I’ve tagged a few people who might want to join in, but if you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged!

The good earth was published in 1931 and tells us the story of a Chinese man and his family. It beautifully depicts the life of people living in Chinese villages and the values they uphold in their day to day life.
.
.
For me, this book is mainly a rags to riches story and the transformation of values of a man when he is nothing to the most rich and important man in the community.
.
.

Although, the story is set in rural China in early 20th century and shows their culture, values and traditions but it was surprising how much I was able to relate to the values people still follow here in rural India. I, personally learnt a lot of life lessons from this book.
.
.

This is the first book in the trilogy. However, it ends at such a place where if one doesn’t want to follow through the whole trilogy, it suffice.

At the end, no wonder this is a Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Happy to have read this one!

I used to be so precious about my books. I wanted to keep them so pristine and like they hadn’t even been touched. Since reading more, something has changed. I’ll always take good care of my books but I’m happy for them to look well read and to write in them and underline when I find words that speak to me.
.
.
Olive Kitteridge is one of those books where the writing is so beautiful I can’t help but underline to make sure I don’t forget. I love this line “Who, who, does not have their basket of trips?” We all have our hopes and dreams for the future, those ideas we daydream about for when times may be better. Not knowing if that basket of trips will ever become a reality but desperately hoping that one day it does.

My #nofearnovember pick is The Overstory. It's over 500 pages and nearly 23 hours long...But I don't mind. I ❤ long audiobooks. And this one is so beautiful. And yes, I feel like getting a physical copy for this one is entirely inappropriate 🤣 My new favorite neighborhood tree told me so...Ain't she a beauty?! 🌳🍁🍂❤

📚 read this year: 83
I listened to the audiobook, so I don't have the physical book. It's a photo taken from the internet. I have to say right away that I don't like writing book reviews, so I'll give it a rating and will make some comments if they come to me.
📙The Road by Cormac McCarthy
⭐ 4/5
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic
Book Description (taken from Goodreads)
The searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive.
A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

OLIVE, AGAIN by Elizabeth Strout (2019)
••
Strout once again gives us a series of vignettes of every day people living ordinary and extraordinary lives in fictional Crosby, Maine, continuing with and adding to her earlier book, OLIVE KITTERIDGE (winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2009). Elizabeth Strout paints a beautiful portrait of her characters, full of colour, shadows, depth and hidden meaning. She puts together unlikely pairs, such as Olive and Cindy and we watch with wonder as she weaves her magic, drawing on the similarities and the differences. The stories stand alone but they also intersect and overlap, very much like life.
••
Have you read this one? This is my third Elizabeth Strout read of the year and I’ve loved each of them!
