*What is the best age to start music classes?*
*Babies from the age of 6 months can be exposed to instruments such as bells, shakers, tambourines etc. These “lessons” are informal with the participation of the parent(s) who will serve as a guide by immersing them in a musical environment through getting involved in simple movement activities such as musical games, swaying or dancing while holding the baby, or singing/playing an instrument for the child. *Once the child is around age three to four years, it may be time for partially - formalized lessons. The goal is to further develop skills like identifying a beat and melody in music and gaining rhythm. One of the methods used is the Suzuki method where the kids learn by listening, repetition, memorization, development of vocabulary, motivation and parental involvement. Piano, Singing, drums and Violins are the most common instruments used at this level. *By age five, most children have built a foundation that has prepared them for formalized music lessons. The goal of the lessons is to further their understanding of music. Instruments played with success at this level are piano, violin, singing, recorder, drums, guitar, or ukulele. *By age 10, the child will have a variety of skills associated with their instrument of choice. They’ll also have the physical strength to try bigger instrument, such as a brass or large string instrument that requires a higher level of strength and stamina. Around this time, the goal of lessons is improving performance ability. This gives them the opportunity to participate in a band or orchestra at school with their friends, an experience that is often remembered vividly into adulthood. *Adults can start any instrument at any time. Their success is based on how willing and committed they are to learning and practicing.
Keep in mind exceptions will undoubtedly occur based on the individual's exposure and gifting. Music experience at an early age is extremely important in a child’s developmental process.
