At one point or another we all experience a breakout, purging or a rash from a new skin care product. It can be difficult to recognize the differences so here’s your guide....
PURGING is when the bacteria from the deeper layers of the skin come to the surface resulting in a pimple. This usually occurs with the start of products that increase cellular turnover like AHA/BHA, benzoyl peroxide, prescription/OTC retinol, acne treatments, detoxifying clay masks and even some active aromatherapy products. It usually happens in areas of the face that are more oily like the nose, chin, forehead, and cheeks. It also happens in areas that you generally are already prone to getting pimples in. The lifecycle is very different with a purge, as the skin heals a lot faster than with a regular pimple.
While the act of skin purging can be quite annoying, in the long run it’s getting all the bacteria out of your pores resulting in healthier skin. If your skin starts to improve after the initial purge you will know it’s just that. Now if it continues to break out it very well could be an acne or dermatitis....
REACTIONARY ACNE usually happens in new areas of the face that you typically don’t get pimples in. Other factors to consider are the condition of your skin before starting a new product. If you are already sensitized or inflamed a new product can very well give you a reaction. While if your skin is pretty calm when starting the new product your skin could act perfectly fine. If your skin is breaking out more and not healing this is not a purge. The product is giving you acne and this product may just not be for you.
DERMATITIS or ALLERGIC REACTIONS also can be mistaken for breakouts. Usually, these types of reactions cause redness, inflammation and tiny little bumps or whiteheads that are different than traditional looking breakouts. It could just be a sensitivity or even an allergy and this is when I would recommend stop using the product altogether.
