There is one word that I can think of to describe Young Frankenstein, and that word is brilliant. I haven't seen Mel Brooks' entire filmography, but this one will be hard to top as his best. I have seen this movie countless times, and it makes me laugh just as much now as it did the first time I watched it. First of all, this is gorgeous looking movie. The sets and set pieces are impressive as is the filmmaking. Brooks did a great job shooting this. And having it be a black and white movie is a great choice. It really adds to the overall feel of the movie and adds significantly to it. The script is hilarious, consisting of classic Mel Brooks' literal humor and sight gags. His love of puns is evident once again here. But I found, unlike movies such as Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, I didnt feel the movie was drowning in jokes. Yes there are a lot of gags, but it seemed more evenly spaced out. So it wasn't as overkill. I can't praise the performances enough in Young Frankenstein. This movie features some immense talent and the level of such is off the charts here. Gene Wilder is a perfect mad scientist and Marty Feldman is pure brilliance here. His performance is hysterical and he really makes the movie. What a treasure both of these men were. Cloris Leachman and Teri Garr are both fantastic as well. Madeline Khan as always is a treat to watch and Peter Boyle is great as the monster. Speaking of which, the efforts with regards to the monster are evident and pay off. The make up is great and he looks enormous. Peter Boyle was a fairly tall man in reality, but the way they shot him, make him look even bigger. It's clever filming. This movie is a treasure.
