In May of 2013 at the Amgen Tour of California, I slammed into the side of a mountain. I was probably riding about 50 km / hr. I was expecting to see a straight road and therefore was holding the line and speed to exit the previous corner as fast as possible. That’s "When Shmack Happened." It wasn’t the only crash of my career resulting in an ambulance ride to a trauma center, but it was the one that caused me to hit the ‘pause’ button the longest. I shattered my left hip, cracked my nose and a rib, and otherwise miraculously walked away. After I recovered, I had no guarantee of ever making it back to the level I was prior, nor was I even sure I wanted to continue. Ultimately, though, through long conversations with the Lord, it was clear I needed to ‘go.’ Go back into the sport. Do the next year. Trust Him and move with Him without knowing every detail. I couldn’t see beyond the next few months, but I didn’t need to, because I knew He did. As I continued to do each day, each month, each year…much of the time not seeing anything… I did make it back. First there were glimpses in 2015. Then, in 2016 at age 41, I won my second world championship! And 2017 and 2018 brought three more USPRO National Titles.
