“INTERPLAY” Bill Evans (piano) Percy Heath (bass) Philly Joe Jones (drums) Jim Hall (guitar) Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); 1963, Riverside, OG, DG
My Musings: I can’t believe it’s taken me 23 posts to get to a Bill Evans album. For shame, Cali Jazz Fiend, for shame! I actually forgot Freddie Hubbard was on this album and what a treat it is. Although he’s quite muted compared to where his career went after this. Evans is at the top of his game in a quintet, rather than a trio, format. Of course, you have Jim Hall just before their Undercurrent date. Philly Joe on drums… absolute hard bop bliss! This album is the first of Evans’s extraordinary catalogue that I purchased. A yard sale find and still a resident in my top 5 vinyl finds… you know you all keep track of your best digging experiences. The hunt is what keeps us going, am I right? Either way, search this album out. Still on the lookout for a stereo pressing of this record. Ahem, anybody out there? I’m sure it’ll show up at some point.
