Tiny Toto has stolen all our hearts, but Sala is particularly smitten. Despite the fact that she barely got to know her own mother – Sala was orphaned at just one week old – the kudu’s maternal instincts are strong and she has taken it upon herself to look after Toto. The baby dik-dik loves all the attention and is becoming rather spoiled!
We are currently raising Sala and Toto at our Kaluku Field HQ. When they’re old enough, both orphans will be reintegrated back into nearby wild herds, but between now and then, we foresee lots of pampering in their futures.

Elephant calves are very tactile creatures and little displays of affection go a long way in making them feel comforted and loved.
In the wild, babies like Sattao would have his mother and nannies on hand to provide this, but at the Nursery, our Keepers and the ever-obliging mini-matriarchs (like Mbegu, pictured here) fill that void. While Mbegu is always happy to lend an ear, others aren’t quite ready to take that step. Mischievous Esampu is slowly but surely getting in touch with her maternal side, but she draws the line at that — whenever the little ones try to suckle her ear, she pushes them away and runs off in the opposite direction!

Yatta (who we rescued back in 1999) successfully returned to a life in the wild over a decade ago, but she still considers the humans and elephants at the DSWT to be a part of her family. Ever since she gave birth to Yoyo in October, she’s been visiting us regularly with her new baby in tow. During one of these recent social calls, our Keepers took the opportunity to remove some pesky ticks from little Yoyo while Yatta looked on, supremely unconcerned! It all comes down to the mutual respect, trust, and love that they share for each other.

Regranned from *dswt - In November 2011, a pint-sized calf marched into a village looking for company. When we rescued him then – only a week old at most, with umbilical cord still attached – we had no idea that he would become one of the most mischievous orphans we’ve ever raised! This #DSWTTransformationTuesday, swipe through to see the evolution of Kithaka over the past six years.

Photo 1: Kithaka was a character from day one. Here he is, two months old and already commandeering a Keeper’s umbrella as his own!

Photo 2: The older girls at the Nursery (like Naipoki, pictured here) doted on him and Kithaka quickly grew to appreciate an audience. He loved to regale everyone – two-footed and four – with his tricks, tossing his trunk in the air, standing on his head, and challenging the bigger orphans to pushing matches.

Photo 3: In May 2015, Kithaka graduated to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit alongside his best friends Barsilinga and Lemoyian. It wasn’t long before he was showboating his way around his new home and plotting new pranks, requiring the constant vigilance of the Keepers!

Photo 4: This fall, Kithaka took another step towards independence by going off his milk bottles. Any day now, he will decide it’s time to transition to a wild life! In the meantime, he continues to keep us on our toes and thoroughly entertained by his antics.

Your support makes it possible to give elephants like Kithaka a future. To foster him or another elephant in our care, click the link in our bio or visit:

A young mountain gorilla in Rwanda studying my face and camera gear. Every time I carefully approach a group of mountain gorillas in their beautiful forest is equally fulfilling. One of the true privileges of my job! These primates are critically endangered and only approximately 875 are left in the wild in the Virungas. They are powerful, intelligent and pacifistic all at the same time but they need help to survive! Maintaining a sound population of mountain gorillas and keeping their forests in balance is actually the best way to secure long term stability for people, nature, climate and the region's economy. #Silverback #Gorilla #DirtyMonkeyTV

Matriarch-in-the-making Tagwa loves all the babies, but Sattao has a special place in her heart. While out and about one morning, the Nursery herd came upon a stream. Sattao’s friends crossed to the other side with little fanfare but he was too scared to do the same, leaving the little bull very frustrated. Tagwa heard her charge’s cries and rushed over escort him through the water, offering gentle nudges of encouragement the entire way. When they got to the other side, Sattao gleefully rejoined his friends and Tagwa could be seen trumpeting with delight at the sight, just like a proud parent!

I'm in the middle of cleaning up the kitchen from the mess I made for this one photo. Broccoli randomly placed and lentils that have fallen on the floor. Any other people have this struggle? .
.
Anyway, part of my self love is fueling my body with the things it needs so I can ride my bike to work, teach yoga class and have random dance sessions. Food is fuel. I use to demonize it and felt fatigued most of my teenage life. But I have found a lifestyle for me that works and feel super energized.✨✨✨✨

Video by @paulnicklen // “This is what a starving—not old—polar bear looks like. The muscles atrophy. They have no energy. It’s a slow, painful death. When scientists say polar bears will be extinct in the next 100 years, I think of 25,000 bears dying like this. There is no band aid solution. The simple truth is this—if the Earth continues to warm, we will lose species. We must reduce our carbon footprint, go vegetarian, stop cutting down our forests, and begin putting the Earth—our home—first.” - @paulnicklen

Journey gives a great yawn for the camera. The Bengal Tiger (Panthera Tigris Tigris) is the most numerous subspecies of tiger in the world, however only around 2,500 remain in the wild, and they are still an endangered species. Unfortunately many of these animals are killed for their pelts and for "magical medicinal" properties. While steps are taken to save these animals, increased habitat loss from human expansion continues to threaten these beautiful animals. Come visit Journey and our other tigers this winter at @cedarcovefelineconservatory in Louisburg, KS

“The collapse of our reefs is an early, yet urgent warning of the threat posed to all ecosystems." ~ @jefforlowski, Director of @chasingcoral (I highly suggest you watch this documentary if you haven’t already!!!) 🐟🐡🐠
• • •
There is hope in and amongst the many undesirable occurrences that we hear about on a day-to-day basis - the research on the 2,300km-long Great Barrier Reef being one of them. With 2/3 of the reef having already been devastated by bleaching due to rising water temperatures over the last two years, scientists have one breakthrough that may help save them. Once a year, the Great Barrier Reef undergoes a spectacular synchronized spawning of corals where scientists will harvest coral eggs and sperm which together with millions of larvae will be used to reseed the reef sections that have already been destroyed.

Another project is one where scientists have identified 112 reefs that can perform as reproductive reefs for the rest, largely thanks to their ability to produce and distribute healthy coral larvae with natural ocean currents. These kinds of projects can make a big difference in preserving our oceans reefs.

*The U.S. directly benefits from coral reef services – including fisheries, tourism and coastal protection with an economic value of over $3.4 billion each year.

There are many things individuals can also do to have a positive impact on coral reefs. Things such as reducing pollution by walking, biking, taking the bus and disposing of trash correctly. Conserving water can also help my reducing runoff and wastewater into our oceans. By reducing or eliminating the use of single-use plastics and of course by spreading the word.

A hybrid of Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidis species complex) rests on a tortoise farm in Floreana Island. After being extinct in the wild, researchers try to reconstruct the Floreana’s species from selective breeding of the hybrid animals found in Isabela Island transported by humans. The extinction of the Floreana species in the mid-19th century has been attributed to the combined pressures of hunting for the penal colony on the relatively small island, the conversion of the grazing highlands into land for farming and fruit plantations, and the introduction of feral mammals.
