@nepajm has received two reports of the capture Hawksbill turtles in Alligator Pond last week.
Hawksbill turtles are listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List, which means that the species face an extremely high risk of becoming extinct in the near future.
All four species of sea turtles that nest on Jamaican beaches, including the Hawksbill, are protected under the Wildlife Life Protection Act (WLPA).
Under sections 6 and 6A of the WLPA, individuals found guilty of hunting or being in possession (of a whole or part) of any protected animal are liable to pay a maximum fine of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) or face a term of imprisonment not exceeding twelve months. Please note that the term ‘hunt’ means to “kill, capture or wilfully molest by any method” as well as “any attempt to kill, capture or molest ant animal or bird.”
