Today was going to be the second ski day at @ferniealpineresort with the @themaxpass forecast yesterday afternoon for today was for lots of snow so I got a lift ticket last night for today in order to go straight to the lift.
Woke up to rain at the @ragingelkhostel in Fernie and looked at the ski report and it was only reporting 3cm (about an inch). The only sensible thing was to make some bacon and see if it was going to turn to snow. By 11:00am people were coming back to the hostel saying how bad the skiing was so it was an easy decision not to ski today.
One REALLY nice thing about Fernie and the other resorts they own is that if you buy a lift ticket and the conditions suck, you can take it back for a rain check that’s good anytime over the next 12 months if you return to the ticket sales office within an hour of when it was first scanned at the lifts. That’s unheard of among ski resorts (at least in the US) these days.
A number of years ago I bought the @epicpass and never got the chance to pick it up let alone use it. When I called @vail_resorts they just said sorry you’re SOL, no refund, no credit so have never gone back to a Vail property.
Around noon when it was clear the conditions weren’t going to get better I drove to the resort for a rain check. By that time the upper lifts were shutting down and it looked and sounded like the whole Mountain was encrusted in ice.
After a nice long nap back at the hostel the predicted snow was finally falling and temps took a huge nosedive. It’s supposed to keep dumping all night and then be partly sunny so it should be an epic day on the slopes tomorrow. After one more night in Fernie the next stop will be skiing at @skilouise where it looks like a snorkel will be needed to deal with the powder.
