This is a rather long story about my ramen journey in one windy day of April,8th 2018 (tl;dr I waited 5 hours to taste 2 #ramen restaurants with Michelin one-star) One of my goals during my Japan trip was to taste the best Japanese cuisine. I've read about #Tsuta & #Nakiryu a while ago; both ramen restaurants awarded w/ Michelin one-star and very affordable compared to other expensive restaurants on the list
I had decided to try Tsuta since it's famous for using truffle oil, an unusual ingredient for ramen. Tsuta opens on 11am, so when I got there around 10am & found only 3 people were queuing, I felt lucky. Then I realized those people were holding a ticket; apparently Tsuta handed out colored tickets, each colors indicate which time should you go back for dining. By 10am, all the tickets for 11am and 1pm already sold out! The earliest ticket available for 3pm & I had to pay 1000 yen deposit. At first I was hesitant because who wanted to wait 5 hours for a meal? But then again, it's a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. So I bought the 3pm meal ticket.
Then I realized, maybe I could check out Nakiryu instead. Lucky me, Nakiryu is just 20 mins walking distance from Tsuta. I got there 10.30am, an hour before opening time & there was already a queue with approx 30 people in front of me. So I waited. On the street. It was very windy. Yet the sun was pointing at me. My stomach roared a couple times. I waited for about 1.5 hours before I could taste the award-winning #tantanmen (pic 1)
It was very tasty & fulfilling. I have a soft spot for strong flavored broth; so the oily, slightly spicy broth, w/ minced meat toppings won me over. The noodle itself had a nice chewy texture, while the soft boiled egg & slices of pork completed the meal. The dreadful waiting time was somehow paid off.
Then I walked back to Tsuta. Being half-full, I forced myself to have the 2nd bowl of ramen for the day. I ordered Ajitama Shoyu Ramen (pic 2), a soy sauce broth ramen w/ black #truffle oil. The broth was clear but I could taste the truffle. But being half-full & less strong flavored, I gotta chose Nakiryu's
