Rico and I have only been able to work cows once (Nov) in the last 7 months. He did SO well today, recall was awesome, he didn’t over pressure the bulls, sent both directions, was checking in at appropriate times, but doing his thing when he needed to be, fast downs, and held his down stay even when bulls came to lick and push on him multiple different times. Only used his ecollar twice and just a nick. He was to focused on one bull and wasn’t “look back” to see he had missed one when we gathered them into the corral. Then at the very end he creeped back into the pasture and was moving them (very nicely) but I had told him we were done and he just didn’t want to believe me. The nick was even at his “no distraction” working level (4)
He kept these guys back with just eye most of the time, but are young and feeling good, and were curious, so I let Rico up to push them back so they would leave him alone.
I can’t even begin to express how blown away I am. 7 months of not working, that’s almost start over amount of time off. At least a big set back, and that is what I was prepared for.
I’m pretty positive the reason he was so good today is because we have been working on our bond. I would have to say this is my official entry for this months #fultonstrongchallenge . I am noticing a lot of little changes every day, but this is just...wow! I was pretty sure he would be ok today, but I did not expect him to be even better than he was last Spring/Summer when we were working cows all the time.
My heart is so happy to see him doing his thing and doing it well! Plus, who doesn’t like working with a fantastic partner!?
