Buon giorno!

"I want to know what passion is, I want to feel something strongly."
.
Brave New World, Aldous Huxley
.
The final prompt for #hamiltonjuly: Literary Revolution or Rebellion. For this cue, I wanted to use something a little different than a rebellious theme. Instead, I will highlight that writing out of the norm or out of the era can be viewed as a bit of a revolutionary thought process! What better way to encompass this than with banned books?!
.
Here are a handful of books that have been banned or appealed for removal from libraries and schools across Canada. Yes, I did have to throw a treasured Canuck spin on the whole ordeal!
.
It's funny for me to think of some of these titles as shortlisted for exclusion, as I grew up reading them or have learned to appreciate them later in life. Others make more sense due to the language or controversial themes. I often wonder what it would be like to write a story ahead of my time, as George Orwell did. Or to finish a novel, leave it in the hands of the public and come back in a hundred years to see if anything remained relatable. How strange it must be!
.
The beauty in a book? You can pick it up, jump in and try your best to understand its form through language, emotions and context. Even with subject matter that is difficult to read, I try my best to adjust my perspective, gleaning something interesting or unique from the adventure. Huxley hit the nail on the head here! This quote captures how I feel about reading different genres: I just want to try! I want to walk away feeling like I know a small corner of the world a little bit better.
.
I've heard it said that "No book is a bad book, there are only boring readers." While I cannot confirm the validity of this in its entirety, I am learning this statement is increasingly difficult to disprove!
.

"If you could hold off the land, you could hold off that end forever."
.
Have you ever felt akin to a character who has qualities that you desire, but have not developed? On my first journey into the world of Western novels I discovered my own divergent companion. His name? Wyatt Smith. By definition, I also had Lucy. When I gained both, I met "The Girl."
.
Rough Animals, a debut novel by @rae.delbianco , follows Wyatt and Lucy Smith, two twins holding their own on a cattle ranch in Utah. City lights and noise pollution have disappeared in this remote Southern Country, but so have the cattle; felled one dewy morning to a serenade of gunshots and the tune of $4600. Wyatt chases the young assassin, entangling himself in a malebolge of cartels and crime. But sometimes a journey through the desert can direct the future by digging up the past.
.
Beautifully and hauntingly woven, this story arrives in a medley of dirt, tears and coarsely earned scars. It is as resonant as the silent Raven perched upon a bust of Pallas, a lingering memory of Lenore and a harbinger of what will be. It is as vast and vulnerable as T.S. Eliot's Hollow Men; a melody of action and reflection, steadfast as Wyatt's rifle.
.
We all have a scapegoat. Sometimes it appears in the form of a rabbit we've hunted one thousand times, and others it's the vision of a wide-eyed and nameless girl, willing to both bend and wield.
.
But will we recognize ourselves, the blood on our hands, sweat on our brows, that we all return to dust? Can we find the will to stay the mirage, stitch what has been broken, to renew? And if we do, maybe we can keep that dust from settling, holding, as Wyatt tells us, off that end forever.
.
An incredible, emotive and poignant read from inscription to end!

■Death Bringer
By @authorkilmari

Bright white wings,
shimmering in the moon.
Night is here—
death follows soon.

This life is draining,
my emotions are gone.
The pain gets worse,
with a heart gone numb.

For I loved you once,
but I will be the end of you.
Assigned the duty of death,
and now I must follow through.

For the human race,
it cheated me thrice.
So again and again,
I slice and slice.

All the lives I have taken;
all the pain I have given,
I hope it's enough,
for me to keep on livin'. ______

Death Bringer is one of several poems, short stories and essays from the book Man VS Happiness, scheduled to release in February 2019.

"Once upon a time there were four little rabbits and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter."
.
Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter
.
For #hamiltonjuly Day Twelve the prompt is: Love at first sight...of the cover! This edition of Beatrix Potter's tales is one of my favourite books on the shelf.
.
I loved the stories as a child, as well as the beautiful artwork. This copy is quite simple, but I find it stately and elegant. It pairs wonderfully with the watercolour paintings inside. Scroll through to see!
.
What truly makes Beatrix Potter special for me is her combined love of both animals and conservation. She had multiple pets whom she adored, and who became the characters in her tales. She used the earnings from her stories to purchase farm land and low grazing land that would have otherwise been utilized by developers. Among many other environmental accomplishments, she is credited with preserving the majority of the land within the Lake District National Park. She even had notable distinctions in the field of mycology! A woman after my own ecologist's heart.
.
As a hobby-painter, I had to include the acrylic Peter Rabbit ornament I made last Christmas. A little touch of home!

Buon giorno!
~~~
Viene ritrovato un cadavere in una casa non abitata di Londra. Scotland Yard chiede aiuto a Sherlock Holmes, che risolverà il caso grazie alle sue fantastiche doti deduttive e al suo nuovo amico John Watson, un medico militare in congedo.
Il libro è suddiviso in due parti: nella prima vengono descritti i fatti, ciò che Sherlock e Watson fanno per scoprire il colpevole; nella seconda viene ricostruita la storia del colpevole e viene spiegato il movente.
~~~

"If you feel . . . that well-read people are less likely to be evil, and a world full of people sitting quietly with good books in their hands is preferable to a world filled with schisms and sirens and other noisy and troublesome things, then every time you enter a library you might say to yourself, 'The world is quiet here,' as a sort of pledge proclaiming reading to be the greater good."
.
The Slippery Slope, Lemony Snicket
.
For the Eleventh Day of #hamiltonjuly the focus is: Rereads!
.
One of my favourite recent rereads was The Series of Unfortunate Events! Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire are orphans and in need of a guardian. When a friend of the family locates their closest relative, life strays toward the crazy side, and not crazy positive! Luckily, each child has a special gift that helps them brainstorm and problem solve their way out of sticky situations. No matter whose place they abide in or where it's located, the Baudelaires can always depend on each other and their wits to help them persevere.
.
I loved these as a kid, but I understood the references way better as an adult! There are a great deal of nods to the classics, poetry, music, different professions and excellent, excellent word building! The dictionary is practically built into the narrative and it helps, as my partner would say, "keep from breaking immersion!"
.
I so admire authors that choose to write children's literature, as the worlds and phrases have to be cleverly and carefully constructed for growing minds! This series definitely fits that criteria!
.
Rereading brings me so much joy! As does the cheeky quote above!
.
Have you read about the Baudelaires? Have you seen the Netflix adaptation? Who were your favourite characters?

~ ~ ~ ~

E voi l'avete letto? Se no, lo leggerete? Fatemi sapere in un commentino! :D
Buona lettura 💗!

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose/By any other name would smell as sweet..."
.
Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare
.
It is Day Ten of #hamiltonjuly and the prompt is: Prolific author. William Shakespeare fits the bill (playbill?) quite nicely! Here is a funny story about my first encounter with The Bard of Avon.
.
At eleven, I stumbled upon a children's version of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the public library. My mom gave the okay to read, I took my loot home and devoured it. If you've read earlier stories, you might recall my grandmother was quite a fan of poetry, and Shakespeare was no exception! It should come as no surprise that upon telling her all I'd learned, she gifted me a volume of Shakespeare's complete works.
.
Fast forward a few months. I'm partway through grade five and it is spirit week! The theme? Dress up as your favourite book character. I had to go with my newfound love! So, with a frilly collared blouse, a makeshift quill in the pocket of my Denver Hays and my trusty copy, I waltzed through the doors of the classroom and proudly took my seat. That's when it all went downhill!
.
I had been reading Macbeth and was particularly interested in that cauldron of bubbling liquid. There was something satisfying about forming the words from the scene and pretending to stir up a serious concoction. When my teacher asked who I was impersonating that day, take a guess how I replied?
.
"Double, double toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble." I continued, complete in what I believed was the witch's voice. My teacher was entirely horrified, removed me from class and promptly phoned my parents. Looking back, I might need two hands to count the times I've been removed from English classes! Oops. Though the way was 'Bard,' Macbeth remains my favourite!
.
Featuring an Emily Carr rose.

"The hardest man...is but a shell."
.
Sometimes a Great Notion, Ken Kesey
.
A quick update for #hamiltonjuly Day Nine and its prompt: Friends to Enemies. This was a tough cue, but I settled for a wild book: Sometimes a Great Notion.
.
This copy of Ken Kesey's work was a parting gift to me from a friend overseas. It was one of my first introductions to trying different authors! I learned very quickly that Ken Kesey has quite a unique style and perspective. If you've tried this, you will know what I'm alluding to!
.
The Stamper family runs an independent logging company in Oregon. When a local strike occurs against larger logging firms, they refuse to participate. The historical, familial and personal reasons are cleverly revealed as the story progresses.
.
Something you can't quite move past in the story is the jealousy that brews between two siblings. Hank is as stubborn and defensive as they come, taking on the family charge. Lee, on the other hand, is artistic and wandering. While he leaves 'the business'' to pursue other interests, the envy of his brother persists in a true Jacob and Esau fashion. Throughout the story that seed moves to revenge, severing family bonds and pitting brother against brother.
.
This book is not a fit for everyone, but it certainly is its own sort of brilliant. With fallible characters, a slightly strange setting and warped witticisms, it grows into quite a refreshing and interesting story.
.
Have you read this one? What did you think?

Ciao a tutti!
Super consigliato! ⭐️

"You are all the men for whom I would never moan, never mourn. You are the conscience of the Hindu society"
.
.
A throwback to one of my favorite reads of May/June. .
Ms. Militancy is a collection of poems by Meena Kandasamy. I was so taken in by 'When I Hit You' that I wanted to read more of her work. What I understood about her work from this collection and about myself - because I normally don't enjoy reading poetry as much as I like other forms of texts, is that Meena doesn't like the rules and neither do I. Poetry is so often made available to us in a form and manner that feels so cagey, so performed, sometimes unreal - almost fake. This didn't feel like any of that. The poems in Ms. Militancy were more experimental - not just the content but also the form. However, despite the experimentation it didn't feel over-simplistic, it was fluid and genuine.
I have been a fan of Meena Kandasamy's incisive words, her bold ideas and her content but in Ms. Militancy I realised she is equally bold in breaking form.
.
.
Do you enjoy poetry? I find it quite difficult to read and enjoy poetry. Who are some of your favorite poets?

"Runt. He hated that -- even though he knew it was true. Compared to Chinook and some of the other newborns, he was small, very small. He'd been born early. Mom wasn't even sure he would survive -- that's what she told him later. As a baby he was tiny and furless, floppy-skinned, and so weak he could barely cling to her fur. She'd carried him everywhere, even when she went out hunting. When Shade's feeble claws began to falter, she would keep hold of him gently with her own. She saved him from falling from the sky."
.
Silverwing, Kenneth Oppel
.
The eighth prompt for #hamiltonjuly is: Underdog characters! I have been so excited to share my childhood favourite author and the first chapter book I remember reading, Silverwing! Bonus, bats are my favourite animal!
.
If you are not familiar with Kenneth Oppel, you are missing out! He selects interesting themes and builds unique worlds around them, teaching a plethora of facts as the characters and the subjects intertwine. One of my favourite topics he uses is flight!
.
Let me introduce Shade, the runt of the litter of Silverwing bats. Each winter, the colony leaves their guarded roost, The Tree Haven, and flies to The Hibernaculum. The chances of success for Shade look slim, but there is a touch of a warrior in this bat. Shade is quirky, he thinks outside the box and he is determined to use his mind to help him set his path. There are tremendous obstacles and events that offer distraction or set him off course, but both his kindness and tenacity keep his spirits high. He exceeds even his own expectations! Help also comes in a few curious and wonderful forms.
.
Silverwing is part two in a series of four (Darkwing, Silverwing, Sunwing and Firewing) and I continue to treasure them. If you're in the market for a sweetly educational series, give this a go!

Buon salve ancora!

"Some infinities are bigger than other infinities...There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I am likely to get...but, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful."
.
The Fault In Our Stars, John Green
.
It's Day Seven of #hamiltonjuly and this prompt is a bit tough to reflect on: Books about loss.
.
Perhaps this story is an obvious choice, but its message was poignantly timed. Interesting, as I swore it would have too much romance and little substance. I would never read it. Then one of my sisters pleaded with me to try. I was proven so wonderfully incorrect!
.
Cancer and loss play large roles for both of the main characters. At the time I read this book, my life was untouched by cancer. I knew this story would break my heart, but I could put it down and walk away. Three months later, my partner's mother received her own diagnosis and all those neatly guarded fences crumbled.
.
I had come to know a kind of grief in the middle of the night. The world goes quiet, save those cruel voices uttering reminders of all you stand to lose. One evening, this passage came to mind. I realized I owned my own unbounded set of days. Happy days. Days to be grateful for. Days ahead, however many. This story didn't change me, but it did help change my perspective. Thankfully, the prognosis since then has been quite positive! Though I recognize this is not a standard reality, I continue to be grateful for ours.
.
Before Sparkplug passed last month he spotted a beautiful Swallowtail butterfly, which I've never captured on camera. Today feels like the right day to share this image. My small offering of continued solace throughout our peaks and valleys.

"Mary, the ribbons, the ribons, the ribbons..."
.
Pride and Prejudice, 2005
.
A late night post for #hamiltonjuly Day Six and its prompt, Sisterhood.
.
Whenever I think of a story where siblings are featured in their total glory, Jane Austen's writing comes to mind. She always captures the very essence of relationships with family members, specifically siblings. She is able to balance the reality of their personalities from a strikingly honest perspective, highlighting not only the endearing qualities, but also the most irritating ones!
.
The simple truth in these relationships: You each bear equal witness to one another's strengths and weaknesses. Despite this, blood is thicker than sibling rivalry! It's an unconditional love! At least, it is for me and my three younger sisters and brother!
.
My sisters and I have the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice memorized down to the hand movements. The scene with the ribbons is particularly special to me as it is a reminder of growing up beside those crazy munchkins; everything completed at the last minute, clothes everywhere, personalities clashing, arguing wildly and then exchanging pleasantries two seconds later so you could borrow shoes, some makeup or a curling wand, and always knowing there was a first rate line of defense if anyone outside the family stirred up trouble.
.
Reading this story gives me a real sense of pride (haha!) in being part of a big family, and a large measure of gratefulness for those sisters who are now, as adults, my closest friends. Even though we once fought tooth and nail, we now agree more readily in discussions. This is especially true of plotting to rename our youngest brother "Mary."
.
(This edition of Jane Austen's stories was kindly gifted to me from someone who also feels like a sister!)

Buona sera!
Fatemi sapere!
Un grosso bacio per la #giornatainternazionaledelbacio 💗

"They've got the worst taste in the world, magicians. Always have done. Oh, they keep themselves all suave and sober in public, but give them a chance to relax and do they listen to chamber orchestras? The prompt for Day Five of #hamiltonjuly is: Witty banter. I cannot think of a book series better suited to wit and banter than The Bartimaeus Trilogy, which has more recently been graced with a prequel!
.
Bartimaeus is a five-thousand year old djinni who has been summoned into the world by a very young magician. Nathaniel is too young and too ambitious, and Bartimaeus isn't happy about it! Together they adventure through espionage, magic and time all while arguing and sharing their sharp-tongues!
.
The book swaps between the narratives of Bartimaeus and Nathaniel. Each chapter reflects one of their actions and accounts. Watch out for Nathaniel's side of the story, as Bartimaeus makes sneering side commentary about him to the reader in the footnotes. In fact, the majority of the book is written in the footnotes!
.
Have you ever read consistently funny footnotes? I sure hadn't before these books. Bartimaeus is wild, sarcastic and absolutely hilarious, and he makes peer reviewed journals look excessively boring. Oh, wait, they are a little dry already, aren't they?
.
Well, if you don't have to read them, don't. If you do, however, why not try mixing it up with a little bit of magic and world history, djinni style? You will laugh, cry and, by the end, find yourself believing a bit more in love, friendship and humanity.

June reading round-up! ✨ What a boiling month 💦🌞 What have you been reading recently? Here’s what I read last month 📚📚📚

~ the joyous @emmagannonuk’s empowering book The Multi-Hyphen Method, a must read for everyone 💛👩🏻💻
~ the perfectly intriguing and intoxicating Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday. A novel of two (entwined & asymmetrical) halves 🏙️ ~ The Cost of Living by Deborah Levy: lives up to hype, her nonfiction writing is gorgeous 💔 ~ possibly my new favourite book (!!) the gloriously crafted epic of loss and identity, The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai ✨ I LOVED it – I started reading this when I was 14 or so just after it first came out, but couldn’t get into it. I’m glad I waited because I got so much more out of it reading it more than a decade later 🌟

Is anyone else trying to #readwomen this year?

"Submit," the king whispered, almost lovingly. "You have nowhere to go, nowhere to hide...This life is at an end for you, Eragon Shadeslayer, but a new one awaits. Submit, and all shall be forgiven."
They had lost...He had lost.
.
Inheritance, Christopher Paolini
.
What better way to celebrate the fourth prompt for #hamiltonjuly, "plot twist," than a bendy-arrangement of the Inheritance Cycle. Capped a la dragon, of course! The way these books became part of my collection is quite a twist in itself...
.
Shortly after reading through Middle-earth for the first time, I was browsing around a local bookstore with my siblings. Our grandparents believed wholeheartedly in the gift of reading and always saw that we had funds for birthdays. We would make one mass trip into the city to use our savings, and to bring home new adventures set in ink and transferred to paper. Talk about blessed!
.
I was lost as a reader. I had outgrown my middle school books, but I didn't have the life experience to understand adult fiction. Nothing on the shelves looked interesting, so I gave in and approached the staff, my mom in tow. I exaggerated, she was actually leading the way!
.
In my experience, staff are most often friendly and willing to help, but rarely are truly gifted in their area of service. When I asked the lovely woman at the counter for some book suggestions, I expected to her to point me in the direction of Harry Potter. She didn't. She looked me over, tilted her head, and without asking what I liked said, "I have just the book for you." She led me to Eragon, with a promise that I would absolutely love the story. I did! This series is so clever with an unexpected and refreshing ending!
.
Over the years, this lovely lady continued to prompt my reading choices. She's never picked a book I did not adore!

'There you are!' came the answer. 'It's all quite useless. He said so himself. You are the fool, going on hoping and toiling. You could have lain down and gone to sleep together days ago, if you hadn't been so dogged. But you'll die just the same, or worse. You might just as well lie down now and give it up. You'll never get to the top anyway.
.
'I'll get there, if I leave everything but my bones behind,' said Sam. 'And I'll carry Mr. Frodo up myself, if it breaks my back and heart. So stop arguing!'
.
Mount Doom, The Return of the King
.
#hamiltonjuly Day Three asks for a determined character. I would be remiss if I did not pick one who believes, beyond all doubt and reason, that he will survive the task set before him. Hope is a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing. Samwise has it, and it makes me feel brave.

Q: What knowledge do you like to furnish your mind with?
.
I must confess to being partial to history. It's not that I don't love science, but it forever fascinates me to see how different our lives are from the people who love before us... And how similar they can be at the same time. I love drawing correlations between the past and the present, trying to figure out how the former influences the latter.
.
Reading update: War Storm is finally getting to the part I like. I stan a super stubborn couple, but at least someone is trying to repair things (heavy side eye at thebother person). As for This Savage Song, I finished it yesterday and I've moved onto book two. Which is fantastic. My faves aren't even together atm but the angst is glorious already, so I can't wait to see what happens when they're actually in each other's presence. Also, Schwab does such a good job of just hooking you from the start. Maybe it's that I jumped straight from one book to the next, but I'm already so invested and I haven't been feeling that lately, not even in sequels.

Buon salve!

~ @athelye

"Call me Ishmael."
.
Moby-Dick, Herman Melville
.
Good evening, friends! You might have seen my story update showcasing a fantastic photo challenge called #hamiltonjuly ! A short, fun summer challenge sounds delightful to me. For the next few weeks, I will be sharing books I feel fit the prompts! Check out the story if you desire more details or want to see who is kindly hosting!
.
I'm a day behind and have opted to use the guideline from Day One: Best opening line.
.
"Call me Ishmael" isn't an overwhelming phrase, but there is something so intriguing to me about a narrator immediately introducing themselves with such warmth. Ishmael trusts me before the book begins.
.
This beginning has always left me feeling incredibly curious! Who is Ishmael? What is he like? What does he do? Does he have a pet cat? Does he ever chase pigeons? Would he approve of my pink suede Converse knock-offs?
.
I love an interesting opening that makes me want to read more. There is something so lyrical about this statement, and as the book progresses it perfectly frames the wave-like undulation of Melville's writing.
.
My mom told me recently that this was a favourite story of mine to hear as a baby. I would rock back and forth to the sentences, much like being on a boat. That feeling continues into adulthood; passing onto a ship near the seaside and mapping out routes to capture a white whale, all while moving to the reverent hum and softened lilt of the water.

I spent an hour looking through some of my old journals this morning and realized I’ve come a long way.
I ran across my notes from one of my favorite books. The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks.
Gay’s perspective on how to take your life to the next level is inspirational and actionable. Peppered with real life stories and journal prompts to help you dig deep…To take the big leap.

In The Big Leap, Gay, explains we have (4) Zones.
• Zone of Incompetence - activities you are not good at
• Zone of Competence - activities you are competent at, but others can do just as well
• Zone of Excellence - activities you do extremely well; your comfort zone
• Zone of Genius - your natural genius, ultimate path to success + life satisfaction

When I started my journey…

Today is a cold rainy day🍃 in Atlanta, only 24 degrees Celsius or 75 Fahrenheit. It's what a cold summer day in the South means!
A good opportunity to spend an afternoon on the balcony for me. And, of course, plan a new adventure🏔️️, or adventures even!☕️🍰 I haven't know much yet about the country I'm going to visit. But I decided to start with reading poems of one of its famous poets.
💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐

'Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.'
.
The Wasteland, T.S. Eliot
.
When I was a little girl, my grandmother would recite pieces of poetry or sections of novels by many of the masters. It wasn't until my adult years that I realized just how great her love of language was. So great, that she could share these pieces by heart (and do her crosswords in pen!). I was constantly in awe of her ability to remember works and teach their importance out of sheer joy and admiration.
.
A little over a year ago, I resolved to take up her torch and honour her by committing one poem a month to memory. One of the first I tried was The Raven. That February taught me to do something I deemed impossible before breakfast! Every month since has become a new and rewarding adventure.
.
This week a lovely friend gifted me this gorgeous collection of poems by T.S. Eliot, and I was overjoyed! Reading his work reminds me of the wonderful conversations about literature and poetry I used to have with my grandmother. Thank you, sweet friend, for your thoughtfulness!
.
Kindness is contagious within this community and it's wonderful! You so often make my days with your lovely comments and posts. Whether you're new to this page or used to the long-winded stories, I want to thank you for journeying alongside me and making life feel bright!
.
I thought it would be fun to do some shoutouts in return for your care! Share your favourite word below and I will highlight a photo from your page in my stories (introductions might even appear in the form of a short poem!). I can't wait to see what you choose!

❣️beautiful ❣️
Life is too short to fall for people who don’t love you loudly, or for relationships that don’t set fire to your soul.

Our time on this earth is impermanent, and in the short years we must love fearlessly.

The person you’re meant to be with will challenge you, will push you, will make you crazy and happy and confused, and show you what real, complicated love is.

The person you’re meant to be with will terrify you because they make you feel something.
So this is what you need to know about love—you must always chase the person who scares you. Don’t settle for comfort because it’s familiar. Don’t be content with what you know because there’s a world out there waiting for you. And life’s too short not to pursue that.

Fall for the person who terrifies you because they have new ways of looking at the world, because they are different, because there is some unexplainable connection that is pulling you back to him or her, no matter how much you try to deny it.

Fall for the person who terrifies you because you feel something when you look into his or her eyes. and because scary is a change, a challenge, and both of those things will help you grow.
Fall for the person who terrifies you because what the hell else is our purpose on this earth than to love and love foolishly, fearlessly, fully?

Life is too short to hold yourself back from feeling something deeply. Life’s too short to deny your heart the pleasure of falling into someone, and giving them your soul. Life’s too short to pretend that you’ll find love where it’s comfortable and easy, because in all reality, love will never be easy. And that’s the most beautiful part.

Life’s too short not to pursue people that scare you, because those people are the ones who will change your life. And we’re all searching for that love that will alter our entire lives.

It’s waiting for you, go get it.

"For the fragrance that came to each was like a memory of dewy mornings of unshadowed sun in some land of which fair Spring is itself but a fleeting memory... 'Well now! Who would have believed it? Said Ioreth to a woman who stood beside her. "The weed is better than I thought. It reminds me of roses of Imloth Melui when I was a lass, and no king could ask for better."
.
The Healing Houses, The Return of the King
.
A few days ago, I said goodbye to my best four-legged friend. Though my posts here and my reading slowed, I was able to soak in a lot of time with him and grant good palliative care.
.
Books have a tendency to find you in a time of need. Although I'm now behind on my buddy read through Middle-earth, this passage from the Healing Houses was exceptionally poignant for my week.
.
If you don't view pets as family members, these sentences might seem out of place to you. Sparkplug was often my closest companion. He endured both of my graduations, spent every exam worthy all nighter with me, ate shortbread cookie dough while I prepared Christmas dinners, always waited at the door for me, and we talked every night while I brushed my teeth. Those moments, though fondly remembered, are also sorely missed.
.
The description of the fragrance of Athelas immediately reminded me of the botany and herbology of roses, which are said to grant calmness and peace to their viewers. Every day this week, Sparkplug and I sat in the garden and I showed him the wild roses and told him the same tale. He would sniff, perk up his ears and curl up next to me while I worked. How strange that on the very next page, Ioreth shares a similar sentiment! I laughed at the timing!
.
Reading has been a solace this week. I'm grateful to Sparkplug for smelling the roses with me, and to the Healing Houses for the impact on their hue.

"So passes the sword of the Barrow-downs, work of Westernesse... No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will."
.
Merry weakens the will of the Witch King, The Return of the King
.
Often the chapters in Return of the King are narrated by Merry and Pippin. How I have grown towards their compassion, intuition and loyalty. Qualities of praise which allows the Hobbits to maintain an outward focus, even when their own personal barriers crumble.
.
This week, I wrestled with the idea of developing a will so strong that despair could niether falter nor detain me. Then my family and I did a local Escape Room. Forced practice!
.
We were on a Spaceship, attempting to activate a self-destruct while looking for clues about the disaster. It was dark, damp and foggy. We were hunted. Each of us had an identity and a task we were required to complete. Alone.
.
I don't operate at peak performance in the dark. Unfortunately, I was the first to walk down the eerie hallway, through the decontamination chamber and into a pitch room to investigate.
.
I froze, solid, and glued my feet to the floor. My mind could not be tricked or pried from what might be lurking in the shadows. I couldn't think of puzzles or fellow shipmates while locked and fumbling through the black.
.
I remembered Merry didn't falter. He was terrified of the Witch King, but still he drew his sword. Through hopelessness his direction was clear. He cleaved the great darkness and thoughtless desire from that ghastly fiend. In that moment, Merry's will outstripped the desire of the Witch King.
.
Eventually I completed my task, outcompeting the aliens. Perhaps I do have just a touch of the ole Brandybuck!

Letting go of things that no longer serve us, or bring us joy, can be hard. We often are reluctant to let go. If this sounds familiar, do take a look over Kondo’s book, Spark Joy. Primarily focused on transforming your home, the ethos of the book is only to surround yourself with things that bring joy, and to let go, with love, of things that no longer serve you. As well as giving you a clutter-free home, you’ll be amazed how much this philosophy will also change your whole outlook on life...

Just finished reading 'Kholodov's Last Mistress' - One Kiss in Moscow by Kate Hewitt 💑💏📖 ...I only read romantic novels and this was my favourite page. 🎀 I was able to relate to this page mostly because, Bab and I have had a debate about the topic of a partner being your therapist as I believe that one should be there for their partner in good and bad times, as a loving partner and therapist and there should be mutual exchange of love and understanding but, Bab believes that a partner shouldn't be a therapist and that there should be some sort of boundary between being a partner and a therapist. ☔️ Personally, in thought and from experience, I feel that speaking to a random stranger (a therapist) doesn't rid my problems because realistically, that therapist can't help. Whereas, a partner is there around you, more often than that therapist so, it's easier to open up and talk, during moments of anxiety. 🐻💚 Also, I think I'm more motivated to read, with my new iconic bookmark. 🙈 x x
