This morning's art break features another German artist, Adolph von Menzel (1815 - 1905). Unlike Friedrich - the subject of yesterday's art break - Menzel was a Realist rather than a Romantic. His work depicted a wide variety of subjects, from cityscapes to industrial foundries, civic events and nights at the theatre. He was, arguably, the most successful painter in Germany in the 19th century. His sophisticated scenes of Berlin's upper classes are particularly vivid and rich in detail. Like most things, perhaps best in moderation.
