He was then able to focus at what he’s really, really good at. Customer relations. He’s good at selling; chatting with people. He’s the face of the business when it comes to customer service. (Part 1 of 5) “Ray was already in the pest control industry before he started Other Side Services. He was a technician and a manager, so he knew that business and was comfortable. He was under a non-compete contract, so when he left he wasn’t legally allowed to start his own pest control company for two years. So, the natural choice was lawn maintenance. He felt the customer base he had built, would be an easy transition into the pest control business once we were able to start doing that. He was still in the same industry, still able to talk with the customers with any problems, and still able to provide them advice. There’s probably a million things I could say that I wish had happened differently, or not happened at all. But, in all reality, we’re learning everyday. Everything that has happened, has brought us to where we are. It’s all been a learning experience, and even though going through certain things may have felt like ‘oh my gosh, how are we ever going to get through this’, I probably wouldn’t change any of it. (Part 4 of 4) “If you’re coming here looking for the cheapest price - we don’t have that. But, if you want a good quality at a reasonable price, we’re here to help you. We’ve got all the ranges, but we’re not a bottom feeder. I’ve been all over the world, visiting factories - and I’d always bring in what we call a ‘bottom feeder tile’ - something I could just sell easily. I learned really quick that those are generally not what the consumer really wants. I may actually still have some sitting out there in the showroom collecting dust. Once people come in, and see how the quality ranges, they never choose the inexpensive tile. It tends to be too one dimensional. The more glazing applications, the more depth you get in the tile - but that also increases the price. I could talk about tile all day. I just love it. And I like interacting with people - I genuinely like them. We’ve done on average, two to three houses with most customers. The repeat business humbles us. It’s great to see so many familiar faces. When they go on out of here, I want them to do so as a friend. When you make a nice sale, you enjoy it. You help them design their project all the way through to the finish line. We don’t always get to see the end result, but when clients come back and show us their photos of the work that was done - it’s a really proud moment for us. Most people are doing remodeling or additions now. New construction has been taken away by the large chain builders - local people get nothing out of that. The locals come in here, usually wanting to know who to use for a plumber, electrician, finish carpenter and more. We don’t do any installation, but we have a lineup of licensed and insured contractors that we will always refer to you. Kids will come in and want sponsors for this and that, and we’ll always say yes. It’s what we know, it’s what we do, it’s where we live. But, family is the biggest picture. (Part 2 of 4) “I’m a people person. When someone comes in, I want to know where they’re from. What they do for a living. If they have a funny last name - I want to know the history of it. Knowledge is what makes this business special. I have an open door policy - I will answer any question from anyone; the door is never shut. We have tons of products from all over the world, and if we don’t have it, we can usually find it. We do investigations - looking for old tiles for people. Biggest problem we have here in South Florida, is that the new communities are chain built. People come in having issues with their tiles and they can’t find any replacements on their own. We try and find it, but if we can’t, we will always find a solution. A lot of other companies will charge $10 to look up each tile. We don’t do that. (Part 1 of 4) “My Dad incorporated the business back in 1956. We started in Melbourne. I came back into the business in 1979, and we opened up this Vero Beach store. Then we opened one in Titusville. When the recession hit, we had to close the doors to both the Titusville and Melbourne locations - but we still service those locations through this store. In 1985 my Mother retired, and I took over the business. Vero is my home, so I always knew I wanted to keep this location going. But, coming back from the quote unquote business recession hasn’t been easy. Every year since, we’ve had an increase in business, but we’re strapped for capital to get new material in. Any extra money or funds that were available, all went to helping us survive those bad years.
