Last spin of the evening. Time to revisit this beautiful record. I had to put it down a while for fear of wearing out the grooves. Mavis Staples - of the Staple Singers - and Jeff Tweedy - of Wilco fame - collaborate again to create a real masterpiece. Jeff (along with his son Spencer) wrote all the tunes, and together with his son laid down a lot of the instrumentation. I’m amazed at how it doesn’t sound like a Wilco album with a gospel singer on lead vocal. I mean I know better - he is one multi-faceted dude - but I’m impressed by his sensitivity to Mavis’ genre and where she’s coming from. It’s gospel at times, for sure. But it’s also funky, groovy and it rocks out a bit too. PS please unfriend me if you don’t know who Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples are.
