I hate to sound like a typical Instagram horse girl. So hopefully I don’t come across as that. (If it does, oh well.) As I posted in my story, we finally got a round pen up, and so Honey will be going back to work. Yesterday was her first day back to being lunged and doing ground work, and she did better than expected. It has been about a year since she’s even been ridden, so I wasn’t sure how high to place my expectations. She’s spunky, of course, but was not out of control. It’s been 4 or 5 years, I suppose, since I’ve been able to use a round pen at all with any horse. I haven’t done much ground work with any horse either because of that.
Really the reason for this post, I wonder sometimes where I belong. I am an artist, and that’s something I truly enjoy and would love to make my job, but being locked up in my room working on art all the time probably isn’t healthy. Going back into a round pen reawakened something else. No not like some spiritual awakening. I have not learned to speak with horses telepathically and our souls are not connected like the movies portray, although that would be useful sometimes. It’s just a feeling where, even though the first time back to working was nowhere near perfect, you still feel a sense of pride. Because that’ll be your first step towards what you want. There’s a lot I’ve done and it didn’t make me feel like there was something there that just wanted to drive me to do more, but working with horses is one of those things that, despite being sweaty and hot, I can still smile and pat my partner on the shoulder and tell her “Good job.” As she puts in her effort to understand me as well. Animals don’t think like people, we don’t speak the same language either. So even if I can get it slightly through to her what it is that I want, I will be proud of both myself and her. It doesn’t have to be perfect, there just has to be the little bit of effort, and this mare has put a lot in for just the first two days... but before I work her any harder, she needs new shoes.
