Eating out is going to happen no matter how much you vouch to cook from home. One of our most regular recommendations when you do eat out is Poke Bowls! They’re a healthy blend of whole grains, lean protein, healthy fats and high fiber veggies. Fortunately it’s not that hard to recreate this trendy dish with a few simple ingredients you may even have lying around your kitchen. We love the versatility, as well as different flavors and textures grain bowls offer. 😀


Directions:
🔹combine brown rice, edamame, shredded carrots 🥕, spinach and cucumber 🥒. Top with smoked salmon and avocado 🥑.
🔹mix together and season with salt, pepper and heart healthy olive oil

Our wild Saturday night plans consisted of a bottle of wine, a movie rental, and take out. (#thisisparenthood) we ordered Mexican and I got my favorite dish, fish 🐠 tacos 🌮. After stuffing my face with fried fish and fat-filled sour cream, I vouched to find a lighter alternative. Luckily I found a recipe that comes a close second. •

Used smoked salmon (which I eat as much as I can now that I’m #postnatal 😋) in place of fried fish, and 2% Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
Recipe:
🔹lay out small 70 calorie tortilla
🔹top with shredded red cabbage
🔹add in avocado
🔹add in smoked salmon
🔹top with geek yogurt
🔹included the leftover pico de Gallo from Saturday nights dinner (chested)
**this takes about 2 minutes to prepare which is OKAY 👌 In my book

It can be really difficult to use up all of an ingredient when you're cooking for one.
I shared a box of fresh farmers market apples with my sister a couple months ago. These are my absolute favorite apples in the world. But I couldn't eat them all before they started to go soft. Even though I COULD eat them all-the-time. I actually didn't.
Do you forget to finish off something that's not on the counter like me? Or get tired of foods you love after eating them for a week straight? I feel ya!

So, instead of letting these gorgeous apples go really bad or end up in the compost bin, I chopped them up into small chunks and baked them into the most delicious muffins. Baking and sauteeing are my 2 favorite ways to use up produce that's no longer edible raw.

Let's talk about another growing trend in the wellness world.

The act of using one's own urine as a medicinal aid, known as #urinetherapy, urotherapy or urinotherapy, is believed to cure several body ailments. .

The practice of urine therapy dates back to the ancient time and it's becoming popular again. Applying the therapy, you not only drink your urine but also massage your body parts with it. .

Drinking urine, as it is said, returns mineral salts, hormones and other vital substances to the body after they have been refined. .

Health claims have been made that drinking urine may treat conditions such as cancer, heart problems, infections, acne, hair loss, allergies and more. .
.
Some proponents of this therapy advise that early morning urine is the best to drink. They also claim that urine is sterile, however, some studies have shown that urine contain bacteria that could be harmful if ingested. .
.
Now some people are beginning to adopt urine therapy for #weightloss...they are even advised to consume the urine by sipping it like tea and not at a go. .

I am yet to come across any medical evidence to support these claims that drinking #urine would benefit your health in anyway. .
.
Whether you're trying to #loseweight, undergoing cancer treatment or any other health challenge, be careful not to adopt a 'therapy' that cause more harm to your health. .

And as a dietitian, I definitely wouldn't advise you to drink your own pee for any reason. Ask your your doctor for referral to a #dietitian or reach out to us for dietary management of your health conditions.

So I’m posting this picture, not for aesthetic reasons, but because I have been seeing A LOT of food shaming floating around on Instagram. Sure, these iced little cakes aren’t #vegan, #glutenfree, or even #organic but THEY ARE STILL FOOD. Food is food guys, seriously. Yes, some foods are more nutritionally “dense” and can benefit your overall health in different ways than others, BUT that doesn’t mean if your food is made from all purpose flour or corn syrup you’re going to die. All food is metabolized the same. You body doesn’t discriminate between one carbohydrate or fat to the next, SO WHY DO YOU??? Enjoy ALL foods AND please oh please stop posting that some foods are ‘bad’ and others are ‘good’. Those thoughts are dangerous and manifest into shame, fear, and guilt around food. Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5)
Pantothenic acid has several functions, such as helping to release energy from food.
Good sources of pantothenic acid
Pantothenic acid is found in almost all meats and vegetables, including:
chicken
beef
potatoes
porridge
tomatoes
kidney
eggs
broccoli
wholegrains such as brown rice and wholemeal bread
Breakfast cereals are also a good source if they have been fortified with pantothenic acid.
How much pantothenic acid do I need?
You should be able to get all the pantothenic acid you need from your daily diet, as it's found in many foods.
Pantothenic acid can't be stored in the body, so you need it in your diet every day.
What happens if I take too much pantothenic acid?
There's not enough evidence to know what the effects might be of taking high daily doses of pantothenic acid supplements.
What does the Department of Health advise?
You should be able to get all the pantothenic acid you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.
If you take supplements, don't take too much as this might be harmful.
Taking 200mg or less a day of pantothenic acid in supplements is unlikely to cause any harm.

In vacation mode and having an exhausting start. Truth: I didn’t leave the couch yesterday and all I ate was 4 slices of pizza 🍕🍕🍕🍕. Whatever 🤷🏻‍♀️, that was yesterday. Happy Monday morning!☀️ If you caught my stories yesterday you know I made these yummy mini frittatas to take into the week with me!🍳 One question I hear often is “what are some quick healthy breakfast options?!” Well, here you go.✔️After you prep these you only need a few seconds in the morning to heat them up before running out of the door. This breakfast will keep you satiated & unlike some other quick breakfast options (fruit filled smoothies, breakfast bars) it won’t spike your blood sugar causing a crash later in the morning.😴 You can find the recipe for these on my website now!

Whip out those lattes and pair them with this #glutenfree Roasted Almond Cherry Chocolate Dipped Biscotti. 🍪 ☕️ Tis the Season!!!! 🎄Amazing Recipe from @powerhungrycamilla

Ingredients:
•1-3/4 cups (210 grams) chickpea flour
•1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
•½ teaspoon fine sea salt
•¾ cup sugar •2 large eggs
•¼ cup olive oil or coconut oil •1 teaspoon pure almond extract
•6 ounces whole almonds, very coarsely chopped (about 1-1/3 cups)
•1/4 cup of chopped dried cherries

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, oil, and almond extract until blended. Add the flour mixture, almonds, and dried cherries stirring until blended (dough will be stiff). 4. Divide the dough in half and place both halves on the prepared baking sheet. Using moistened hands, shape into two parallel 12 by 2-inch rectangles, spaced about 3” apart.
5. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden and the centers are set. Let cool on the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes.
6. Cut each rectangle crosswise into ½- to ¾-inch slices. Place the slices flat, cut sides down, on the baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges are dark golden. Let the biscotti cool completely on the pan
**Optional: Dip in chocolate if desired! This makes close to 40 small biscotti’s !

Nutrients in frozen produce are frozen in time!...😃Studies on the antioxidants in frozen food have found that levels are similar in freshly picked and frozen produce!

😕They also found that the antioxidants in fresh produce (in the supermarket/grocery store) declined over time, reaching a low point in as little as three days!

💰Cost and convenience are huge influencers when making food choices…
Some people are reluctant to buy fruits and vegetables because they think they're more expensive than other foods or they think they're time-consuming to prepare… Frozen fruits and vegetables however can be very economical, and they can really save time in food preparation because they are prepped and cook in a few minutes…. You are much more likely to increase your fiber and phytochemicals because of this.

🍐Less food waste is seen with frozen produce as it won't spoil… you’re therefore not wasting food or money!
.
🍇Oh and I didn’t mention how great frozen fruit is for snacking on (instead of sweets). Fruit fruit and veg are also delicious in smoothies!!
