Did you know there are some foods that can help calm the fires of heartburn and reduce inflammation? Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help promote digestion. Licorice root and slippery elm can also be found in tea form that can help relieve the effects of heartburn by coating the esophagus so those tissues are not exposed to stomach acid.
You can also look for DGL, or deglycyrrhizinated licorice, in supplement form and take before eating to help also protect the esophagus.
Are there any other natural acid refluxes remedies that have worked for you? Comment below! 👇

🍳A healthy breakfast provides essential nutrients that the body needs like Fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Breakfast give you that extra boost of energy for your morning activities🤸🤸. Missing breakfast may increase feelings of hunger later on in the day, which can result into overeating. 🤓Studies has shown that people who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight increasing their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

#TruthTuesday With the rise in popularity of low carbohydrate diets and studies showing excessive fructose consumption can have negative effects on the body, many have become confused about whether or not fruit is a healthy choice to consume on a regular basis. So, we’d like to clarify a few things.⁣

Since fruit does contain fructose, some worry that including these foods will lead to fat gain and other health issues. However, a meta-analysis through the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that about 25-40 grams of fructose per day is safe. In order to exceed this amount of fructose through fruit alone, you would have to consume somewhere between 3-5 medium apples, 5-8 cups of blueberries, or 5-8 bananas daily, which should sound like an unreasonable amount of fruit to have in one day. ⁣

While it is important to identify how certain nutrients interact with the body, things are often taken out of context. With every serving of berries, melons, apples, and other fruits comes along fiber, vitamins and minerals, as well as other phytochemicals that promote health and well-being. Fruit should not be the concern when we are trying to avoid excessive amounts of fructose sugars. Processed foods and beverages like sodas sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup should be avoided as they can contain 30 grams or more of fructose in just one can. ⁣

Back to the claim that fructose will lead to fat gain. Research shows that fructose is not a “fattening” carbohydrate. No one type of food can be the cause of long-term fat gain. However, consistently exceeding how many calories you require daily is what causes the accumulation of fat over time. We should be striving to eat a well-balanced combination of foods and no one thing in excess! ⁣

Intuitive Eating Principle Number 🖐🏼: Feel Your Fullness. To illustrate, here’s me and a ridiculously large corn dog at the Houston Rodeo..lol.

So, on feeling full- so what? You think, I know what full feels like. What’s the big deal? The vast majority of chronic dieters don’t know how to truly listen to their hunger/fullness cues because they’ve spent so long trying to disconnect from them. Dieting separates us from our body’s signals by telling us when, what, and how much to eat. Instead of listening to our bodies, we listen to diet rules.

Diets often include “cheat days”, and you might find yourself going hog-wild around food on those days, eating yourself way past the point of fullness. And of course you would! If you believe you won’t get to have those foods again until the next cheat day, you’d try to eat as much of it as possible.

Feeling your fullness goes hand in hand with principle 3- make peace with food. Giving yourself unconditional permission to eat AND being conscious and mindful of your body’s signals while eating. If you know you can have that delicious food later whenever you want, you’ll be much more likely to eat until comfortably full even if that means leaving some of that delicious food on the plate. Take some time during a meal to pause and re-assess. Are you feeling full or still hungry for more? Are you even still enjoying the flavors or just trudging through because it’s there? Start disconnecting from diet rules and connecting to YOU!

TESTIMONIAL TUESDAY: "The last few months have been momentous in that my lifestyle has drastically changed for the better, and my health has improved tremendously. Much of this can be attributed to Lila and her guidance as I navigate a safer and more manageable weight loss journey — I'm already down 25lbs!
Lila's given me the keys to ensuring I
know what to do to sustain a balanced diet — something I haven't been able to do..keep over the entirety of my youth.
She also has become a friend and someone I can look towards to help with achieving less stress in my life and an appropriate relationship with food. Thank you so so much, Lila.
I truly appreciate you and all you
have done during my transformation!
Cheers to many more years of a happy life!"

Why are we so hung up on a number? The number on the scale tells you nothing! My goal is to switch our view of health from weight to things that matter. Like how do you feel in your body? Do you feel strong and energized or is today a day for rest? Are you comfortable in your clothes or do you need to buy new clothes? We give way too much value to a number that shouldn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. The number should NOT determine your worth and value as a human. Let’s find our value in things that matter, like our passions!
What’s one thing you think SHOULD define your health?

“Straight leg. Strong leg.” I was told while trying to hold this pose. And in this pose, I realized, the tasks that often seem the smallest and require the slightest shift can be the most difficult. ⠀
Waking up 10 minutes earlier, doing one more rep, drinking water, eating more plants, and so on. Usually we’re almost there. We’re given choices, but we sell ourselves short. We go back to sleep, we do one less rep, we drink too much coffee, and grab snacks from the vending machine.⠀
👐 Most situations are two options. One being the one with the desired outcome and the other being a matter of convenience. For quick satisfaction. ⠀
What if we started the day choosing the more difficult option? Choosing to make the small, but “harder” choice. Maybe, just maybe, things would actually get easier. We would be more satisfied; fueling the whole body, mind, and soul. ✨ ⠀
Walking through the week, let’s make each day a little stronger. Create goals. Be intentional. Let’s a little extra effort into the little things we do.

Sampled @thesolacompany White Wheat bread and the newest @Bariatricadvantage Pineapple Mango calcium chew at support group last night and they were both a BIG hit! The bread is so good and those nutrition stats are GREAT for our patients 👍🏻 I got mine at @harristeeter in the freezer section and am actually sampling it out to my coworkers today. I already mentioned how much I love their granola so I’m happy the bread was good too! I am personally a fan of all the calcium chew flavors by BA so I wasn’t surprised that I loved this new flavor too 😍 definitely recommend both of these products!

As a dietitian, I am always looking for ways to add in more vegetables into my daily routine without really knowing I am if that makes sense. So this past weekend I finally decided to try and make #sweetpotato muffins! Perfect for breakfast, especially with a little bit of natural nut butter added to the top. And this one I tried to go grain free. I think next time I may add a little bit of whole wheat flour or almond flour to it instead so they don't come out so dense. But they are still good to me, especially for a couple bites when I am craving something a little sweet.
Also sweet potatoes are packed with vitamin A, vitamin C, as well as a bunch of other vitamins and minerals our body needs!
I will post the ingredient list in the comments if you think you might be interested in trying them out 😊

It’s time we ditch the mindset of having to achieve perfection with food and focus our energy on achieving PEACE with food✌️Perfection with food and eating is not meant to be achieved. It’s normal for us as human beings to not enjoy, crave or savour every single meal we eat. Sometimes, eating can feel mundane, rushed and simply a nuisance. Why? Because your alive! Being at peace with food and eating helps minimize anxiety around food and allows you to better practice self compassion, an essential element of intuitive eating✨
Have a beautiful day💕
