Moon Day 🌕
In the Ashtanga world, we look forward to our favorite monthly holidays where we take rest from practice that is the day of the new moon or the full moon, such as today. In the eve of such days, we indulge on some our favorite foods since we don’t have to get up early for morning practice. Pizza 🍕 (minus the salami) is for most Ashtangis (all around the world) our favorite shared food of choice that we get to treat ourselves, along with ice cream, dark chocolate, popcorn, or for me, a combination of all those.
In all honesty, and unashamedly to admit, I don’t really wait for a moon day to have pizza, for that’s what Fridays are for too since Saturdays is my general weekly rest day. Then, the next day, on our beloved moon day, we take rest from practice and from our little or big indulgences.
Even though I observe rest from practice on moon days, in the back of my head I never feel I get to mentally rest from it because I always have to teach on those days. I do actually love it. I get to see those Ashtangis I don’t normally see, who are making up a day from their Mysore practice that they might have missed, so I am always curious to see the mixed bag that will show up on the mat. It also grounds me from the fuzzy head I get on those days, and however scrambled the moon might have me, it’s always quite energetic for me to ride the energy of the moon with them.
Today, I can finally say I mentally rested after having taken an horizontal life pause to enter into a Yogic Sleep induced by a guided Yoga Nidra class that evoked a deep and profound state of total relaxation. Though I do Yoga Nidra on my own, it’s so much better to be guided into it and without the restrictions of time I usually have. 15mins is better than nothing, but it usually takes a good 15mins to begin to allow the body to let go and undo. Allowing myself today to completely relax, drop inwards, and enter into a state of deep sleep while awake was a real treat, equally yummy as a pizza, and we know how I love my pizza.
