MALFLORAJoey Terrill’s (@homeboybeautiful) hand-drawn T-shirts are defiantly emblazoned with the words malflora, a Spanish slang term for a lesbian translating to “dirty flower,” and maricón, slang for faggot. The back of each shirt reads “rolemodel” in block letters. Worn by Terrill and a group of friends marching in the 1976 Christopher Street West Pride parade, Terrill’s T-shirts sought to claim space for Chicana/os within an emerging queer public sphere. A number of other artists and groups also utilized T-shirts at the time to signal group affiliation in both artistic and activist projects.
