F (2) ran over to me, popped his watch on the table and said to me in a serious tone, with a slight frown...
"Mummy, don't eat my watch, it's not a vegetable".
I did slightly smirk but really this was important to him. He waited at the table until he felt reassured I wouldn't eat it. He must have known I was hungry.
It reminded me that our children's words, feelings and behaviours are just as important as ours... and it's worth remembering that they see the world differently, from their developmental perspective. Just like I viewed things differently at 20 from how I view them now.
Respecting their message now, at this tender age, gives them the message that no matter who we are talking to, whether we agree with the perspective, or even really understand it, we can still give it respect.
