Mom and I were having a very important conversation about BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) yesterday after a family crossed the street to avoid walking by me. They even yelled at my mom telling her she should be ashamed to have such a “dangerous” dog like me out in public and that she should put me down. I wondered if they meant for a nap cause I like naps a lot.
Naps aside, It made me so sad that people were being so mean to mom all because of me, all I was doing was sniffing this really cool tree and looking for a squirrel. But I still wagged my tail extra hard to show them I was a nice boy. Later Mom explained because of how I look people assume I’m a “pit-bull” dog and because not all people take the time to get educated they automatically assume I’m a bad dog. Isn’t that crazy? I’m glad my mom has learned about BSL. Di you know BSL unfairly targets dogs that have done nothing wrong and is difficult to enforce because Pit-bulls aren’t a specific breed but are a type of dog that can include American Staffordshire Terriers, Bulldogs, Rottweilers and other breed mixes.
BSL also promotes a false sense of security without addressing the root cause of dog bites. The CDC, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Kennel Club, National Animal Control Association and National Canine Research Council all oppose BSL. In fact the AVMA believes it’s not a dogs breed that determine’s risk but a dog’s behavior. Mom said BSL is a fear-based, kneejerk reaction to bite injuries and even though there’s no evidence to show the laws do anything to reduce bite injuries or keep communities safer a lot of places still have them.
Luckily we don’t live in one of those areas so I’m allowed to play in my yard and don’t have to wear a muzzle everywhere. Mom said it’s still important to be responsible and she is always watchful to make sure we’re never in a situation that could be dangerous and that parents should make sure to teach their kids the right way to interact with dogs they don’t know. I know I love pets from kids and am so happy when they know how to say hi. #bsl #pitbull #rescuedog #rocko #love #adoptdontshop #wisconsin #dogs #happydog #thursday
