Having one intellectually-bent daughter (Taylor), and another one more romantically inclined (Jordan) means that sometimes conversations can get rather...heated around here. Suffice it to say that they don't always see eye to eye Recently Tay was trying to discuss my book with me, offering some valid constructive criticism. She had just finished working on a couple of chapters and she didn't approve of one all that much. The conversation went a little something like this...
Tay: It's kind of...pointless. It feels like a filler, without any character OR plot development.
Me: But does everything have to be so full of PURPOSE? Can't there just be a sweet and cheerful chapter sometimes?
Tay: Well, maybe if you created a situation that he can mitigate. You know, show more of his personality. Something like this...(And she proceeded to offer a perfectly dreadful suggestion. At this point Jordan caught on)
Jord: TAYLOR! What are you even TALKING ABOUT? That she take out a HAPPY chapter and replace it with a DEPRESSING one? This world is already FULL of BROKEN HEARTS and SAD stories! I can't even BELIEVE you. (shakes her head in disgust) Mom, do not change a THING.
Things only got worse when Riley Mae heard the discussion and came downstairs to see what the commotion was all about, and being of the romantic persuasion herself, well, you can guess who she sided with. So, things got interesting, the talk ran long and I kind of hung back, thinking, while they debated love, betrayal and other such deep things. I calmed things down when they got too fiery, but mostly I was watching the brawl and deciding on where to take my story. Finally, inspiration struck and I appeased all with a story addition that was met with approval from both sides. But I would just like to take a moment to say this. If you one day find yourself on my doorstep and are brave enough to bring up the topic of feminism, well, I'm gonna have to ask you to leave. Politely, but firmly. Because I'm pretty sure that one of these days THAT hot topic is going to erupt into World War 3. And I may be powerless to stop it
