It was a first date ~ over lunch, because lunch dates are efficient and busy people are like that. I was craving a tenderloin, root beer and sweet potato fries. So why not Mug-n-Bun, 45 minutes off my beaten path but worth the drive if the fries are well done and there’s plenty of ice in the fresh root beer. I was dressed for the office and he was fresh off his worksite. The tenderloins were less than I remember and my request for cheese came wrapped in peel apart plastic. Our conversations were interrupted by calls from his subs and texts from my sick teenager. We sat there for over 2 hours, abandoning the goal for efficiency and the less-than-best tenderloin on the west side. Over 2 years later, the Mug-n-Bun plastic cups are still in our cabinet and we rarely dress appropriately when going out. But the conversations are just as fabulous ~ if not more. Sometimes we’re efficient, but it’s ok if we’re not. He never orders tenderloins if we go out; I don’t even think he likes them after all. That first date turned into every day and all the days going forward. Subs still interrupt our days and our nights, and my teenager is comedic relief. Little has changed and everything has changed, thanks to the unassuming Mug-n-Bun and an extra long lunch.
