The doctor bird, indigenous to Jamaica lives only in Jamiaca. Although there’s lots of different humming birds here, these delightful little creatures are the most widespread and abundant members of the hummingbird family in Jamaica. The long tail feathers, which trail behind the tiny bird makes a humming sound as they fly. It’s said that these feathers resembled the tail coats doctors wore back in the day… which is how they got their name. Maybe.
I remember when I first saw one of these magical little creatures in Roaring River, Westmorland. I fell in love! Tiny little iridescent humming birds, darting between flowers as they fed on nectar and small insects, I was captivated and kept trying to snap a pic... But couldn't catch them. Up in the Blue Mountains, 2 days ago in the mist and rain, I finally got my first (of many more to come) photo
