There are two types of #Dogon granary, male and female. The larger male granaries (on the left) are used for storing grains. Men distribute the grain, usually millet, for the day's cooking. Male granaries are usually bigger that the female and have more than one door. The female granary (right) is used for storing other foods but also personal things like jewellery, clothing and pottery. Men are NOT allowed to enter a female granary.

Each granary is built from clay supported on rocks. The structures are raised off the ground to keep termites and rodents out. The roof is solid clay with a cap of straw thatch to keep the rain from washing away the clay during the rainy season.

Day 12: Pull up to the Africa Festival of Arts and Culture and the egusi is on point πŸ™πŸΎThis was another great ALItv interview with the organizers behind the festival and the people in the crowd. We spoke about how social media is connecting the diaspora... and of Africa being the source of all our cultural roots. From dancehall to hip hop the sound of the drum pulsating through downtown #Halifax was intoxicating. #mamaafrica #rootsandculture

Wailing Souls....my favorite Reggae group. I learned about them in the late 90s with their "Tension" album. I discovered their early works for Henry Jujo Lawes. This was released in 81. The tracks, "Firehouse Rock" and "See Baba Joe" #Greensleeves #wailingsouls #henryjujolawes #rootsandculture #rootsreggae #classicreggae

The doctor bird, indigenous to Jamaica lives only in Jamiaca. Although there’s lots of different humming birds here, these delightful little creatures are the most widespread and abundant members of the hummingbird family in Jamaica. The long tail feathers, which trail behind the tiny bird makes a humming sound as they fly. It’s said that these feathers resembled the tail coats doctors wore back in the day… which is how they got their name. Maybe.

I remember when I first saw one of these magical little creatures in Roaring River, Westmorland. I fell in love! Tiny little iridescent humming birds, darting between flowers as they fed on nectar and small insects, I was captivated and kept trying to snap a pic... But couldn't catch them. Up in the Blue Mountains, 2 days ago in the mist and rain, I finally got my first (of many more to come) photo 😊

What up Chicago!! Gonna try to go to this tomorrow if anyone wants to join.

Come support us crazy Indians (feather, not dot...as my grandma used to say. And now you’d probably be hung in the square for saying that publicly).
###

Some occasions you have to be serious (making a salary, knowing your worth, caring for your body/soul) but for marginalized and very, very much exploited and underrepresented groups of people, speaking up and out is almost JUST as important as humor being the glue that keeps us from crumbling.

The original #storytellers β€”we don’t typically β€œwrite” comedy, poetry, lyrics, songs etc.

They just come to us.

Anyway....MUSIC!! #always #music #chicago #culture
