Roller. Photography.

A kinetic light painting photo which features a screen printing roller and the reflected light from three laser pointers. A red, a green and a blue. I light painted the three lines with the lasers before rotating the camera 90 and light painting again. I repeated the process until I had rotated the camera through 360 degrees (but not painting light after the final rotation). A long exposure of 30 seconds was used in a dark studio space.

No photoshop or other editing has been done, the jpg has been taken straight from my DSLR.

Med ball throws are a key component to our rotational athletes offseason training.
Considering power is plane specific, rotational med ball drills help transfer strength gains from the weight room into rotational power on the playing field. We will also use med ball variations not only to train power but to also clean up or optimize movement patterns in our athletes mechanics. We’ve found that our med ball programs have been the most beneficial way of teaching mechanics over any other coaching tool. Lastly, we’ve discovered in the past that med ball throws also help to teach max intent which the majority of our newcomers greatly lack. One cue we use for athletes is to try and “break the ball” when drilling our med balls throws.
Note: Athletes that lack absolute strength should NOT waste their time trying to develop power.

“Who knows how to FLOSS?!” “Me me!!” *wild group of kiddos starts to dance... 😅 I had the best time with these guys while creating a fun-filled presentation on oral health for the 5th graders at Shadow Oaks. They were a smart group — eager to answer every question first to win some treats! Lots of them shared how much they fear the dentist and we enjoyed quelling those fears by teaching them what a dentist does and what all the scary instruments are for. We taught them how to maintain their oral health with proper brushing techniques and oral products (game idea will be featured next!) Walking down the halls of the school brought back sooo many childhood memories! The inner kid in me was thrivin’ to say the least 🤓🦷

Improving your active range of motion for internal rotation of the hips. Again, the purpose is to achieve a 1:1 active to passive ratio in order to improve joint capacity and to gain strength and control over the new ranges. ⚪

1. In the first video, I am using low level PAILs to open up my active ROM. To do so, first find your end range in internal rotation, then secure your foot in that position (I used a 50 lb dumbbell here). From there, you are driving your foot into the dumbbell via external rotation of the hip. Unlike PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), we want to hold the contraction for longer and at a higher intensity so that the afferent signals reach all the way to your CNS (PNF only allows signals to reach the spinal cord, so no long-term benefits). Your CNS will give you about 10 to 15 degrees of new range for each contraction, although this only works up to about 3 times in one sitting. I did three 1-minute contractions at about 50% of my max effort. ⚪

2. Once you've opened up a new range via isometrics, it's time to add concentric movement. This can easily be achieved by adding a band around your ankles. Pretty straight forward here- you are just actively rotating your hip throughout the ENTIRE range that is now available to you. Keep your hand on the corresponding hip and look out for any compensation- your hip should not push up against your hand if you are purely rotating at the hip. ⚪

3. Lastly, you can focus on building strength at the end range, where we know we are not as strong. There are many ways to achieve this, and the exercise in the 3rd video is just one example. Using the band, I am pulling my hip into maximum IR. From there, simply let go of the band and hold for time. You can start with 5 second holds at higher reps then work your way down to 1 or 2 reps of 20 second holds. The idea is to not let your foot drop at all once you let go of the band, which I clearly struggled to do here. ⚪

And that is how to improve internal rotation of your hips! I hope these helped, please let me know if you have any questions!

I’ve made a few posts about this because it’s important.

Most people out there have a stiff thoracic spine (upper back).

Having this can:
1) Keep you stuck in bad posture
2) Cause low back pain
3) Cause neck pain
4) Cause overhead mobility issues

To INCREASE mobility of an area all you need to do is get that area to move.
-
That is exactly what we are doing in today’s video.
-
We are rotating from the thoracic spine.
-
Start on your hands and knees and sit back on your heels.
-
This will stabilize the pelvis and hold the lumbar spine (lower back) in place.
-
This is a critical step because we don’t want the lumbar spine rotating, only the thoracic spine.
-
Lift an arm and rotate your body from the upper back level.
-
Do this for about a minimum of 15 per side daily.

This is definitely one of my favorite barbell exercises. This one is very demanding and literally works your entire body in one way or another.

As you can see in the video, it’s upper body dominant but is a very functional movement that has amazing transferability to your gait cycle.
