INITIATE FLOW STATE:
PHILOSOPHY: “A fixed hand is a dead hand; a hand that does not become fixed is alive" from the classically overused by martial artists- The Book of 5 rings by Miyamoto Musashi....
Example: Working at my desk, I started to become stuck. I not only was starting to stiffen up, but couldn't really start a project and had trouble finding the zone, I started to fall into bad posture as I zoomed in on my screen with hiked shoulders. Luckily I was able to notice it early on, and step away, take some deep breaths, and get some fluid, dynamic movement, not only to remind my body it was meant to move, and is OH SO ALIVE, but to engage in a slightly challenging movement that requires my undivided attention, really forces me to tap into that flow state of mind we all have the ability to achieve.
SCIENCE: There are quite a few things happening, From the waist down, I'm keeping my pelvis tucked under, and engaging my glutes, and drawing in my navel to my spine, my core stays fired up at all times, and any time I'm holding the mace in front of my body I'm creating static tension by pulling apart the mace or squeezing it together while maintaining good posture(activating chronically underactive stabilizer muscles). Then on the 360s, when that mace swings behing my head, my rotator cuff and stabilizer muscles do even MORE WORK To prevent my lower back from dipping forward, maintaining structural integrity, in addition to other things we'll go over in future posts. Mindset wise, I tuned everything out to prevent the mace from getting away from me, 100% focus required, and walked away a little more tuned in to my body/brain and movement.
Moral: Its okay for you to make your fitness practice beautiful through expressive movement, while still understanding biomechanics and making progressive strength and mobility gains on your way to optimal health. You can have it both ways. More Movement to come.
